With Marvel expected to reboot the X-Men following—or even during—next year’s Avengers: Secret Wars, speculation is running high over who could portray the iconic mutants.

A new rumor suggests that Star Wars actor Adam Driver could join the MCU in a villainous role. Many online initially assumed that Driver was being eyed for Magneto, the character previously portrayed by Ian McKellen and Michael Fassbender. Now, at least one Hollywood scooper claims Driver could bring Mister Sinister to the big screen.

Adam Driver Rumored for the MCU

On July 13, the X account MyTimeToShineHello claimed that Adam Driver had been cast as a villain in the MCU. The post sparked debate among fans over whether Driver would play Magneto or Mister Sinister—or whether the report was true at all.

Another scooper, Apocalyptic Horseman, quickly corroborated the information, adding, “He’s playing Magneto.”

Many commenters expressed doubt, asking if the news was a joke. Others questioned whether Driver would have room in his schedule, as he is reportedly in serious talks for Heat 2. While some suggested that the actor was being typecast after his turn as Kylo Ren, the idea of him playing one of Marvel’s most recognizable villains received relatively little pushback.

Mister Sinister Rumor Replaces Magneto Claim

Three days later, Apocalyptic Horseman posted a revised statement: “So sorry guys. Big mistake from my end but hearing Adam Driver is Sinister.”

Created by Chris Claremont and Marc Silvestri, Mister Sinister made his full comic book debut in 1987’s The Uncanny X-Men #221. Originally known as Nathaniel Essex, the character is a brilliant geneticist obsessed with mutant evolution and the manipulation of powerful bloodlines.

His abilities have varied over the years but commonly include superhuman strength, telepathy, telekinesis, regeneration, shapeshifting, and an extended lifespan. Sinister is also closely associated with Cyclops and Jean Grey, making him a natural villain for a reboot centered on a younger generation of mutants.

Although Fox repeatedly teased the Essex Corporation throughout its X-Men films, Mister Sinister never appeared on screen. Marvel’s reboot could finally give the longtime villain his live-action debut.

Based on physical appearance alone, many fans believe Driver could make a convincing Mister Sinister or Magneto.

More X-Men Casting Rumors Emerge

The latest report also claims that Bill Skarsgård is among several actors, including Patrick Wilson, being considered for Professor Charles Xavier. Cooper Hoffman, the son of late actor Philip Seymour Hoffman, is reportedly in the mix to play Cyclops.

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has previously indicated that the reboot will focus on a younger cast of mutants. Apocalyptic Horseman claims the prospective lineup includes Cyclops, Jean Grey, Emma Frost, Rogue, Storm, Professor X, and Magneto. Beast and Angel may also appear, although their involvement remains less certain.

Many expect Stranger Things actress Sadie Sink to be revealed as Jean Grey in Spider-Man: Brand New Day later this month.

With Marvel Studios scheduled to hold its San Diego Comic-Con presentation on July 25, official news may not be far away. Until then, fans should take every rumored casting—including Driver as Mister Sinister—with a significant grain of salt.
