Marvel Studios at one time built its reputation on carefully orchestrated blockbuster spectacles, but according to a new rumor making the rounds, Avengers: Doomsday may be facing significant behind-the-scenes problems.
A report from World of Reel, citing an unnamed source, claims the upcoming Marvel epic has become a “mess” in post-production after filming allegedly began without a completed script. While none of these claims have been confirmed by Marvel Studios, they line up with comments that have already been made publicly by people involved with the production.
If true, the situation would raise major questions about one of Disney’s biggest films of 2026.
Report Claims the Editing Process Has Become Difficult
According to World of Reel‘s Jordan Ruimy, a longtime source allegedly told him months ago that Avengers: Doomsday was already proving problematic during production. The report claims editors are now struggling to assemble the film after shooting wrapped.

The outlet also referenced comments made by entertainment commentator John Campea, who recently claimed he’d heard similar information from his own sources. According to Campea, the Russo Brothers are reportedly discovering structural issues now that the footage is being assembled.
The report characterizes the situation as one where everything appeared to work while filming, but the problems only became apparent once the movie entered the editing room.
It’s important to emphasize that these are rumors and have not been independently verified.
Marvel Started Filming Without a Finished Script
Perhaps the most striking part of the report is that it aligns with something we already know.
During production, actress Rebecca Romijn openly acknowledged that the script was still being written.

She told reporters that the screenplay had not yet been completed while filming was already underway.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has similarly discussed the studio’s habit of rewriting during production, referring to the process as “plus-ing”—a philosophy where scripts continue evolving throughout principal photography.
That approach has become increasingly common across recent Marvel productions.
60-Plus Characters Create an Enormous Challenge
Even without insider reports, Avengers: Doomsday presents an extraordinary logistical challenge that’s practically begging for problems.
The current cast reportedly includes more than 60 major characters spanning nearly every corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
That means balancing:
- The Fantastic Four
- Multiple Avengers teams
- The X-Men
- Thunderbolts characters
- Deadpool
- Loki
- Doctor Doom
- Legacy Marvel actors returning from Fox’s X-Men universe

Managing even a handful of protagonists is difficult. Managing dozens—many of whom require meaningful emotional arcs while simultaneously advancing a multiversal storyline—is an entirely different challenge.
If significant portions of the screenplay were still changing during filming, it’s easy to understand why assembling a coherent final narrative could become substantially more complicated.
Marvel Has Been Here Before
This isn’t the first time reports of troubled Marvel productions have surfaced.
Over the last several years, numerous MCU projects have reportedly undergone substantial rewrites, extensive reshoots, and major restructuring during post-production.

While many blockbuster films undergo pickups and additional photography, critics have increasingly argued that Marvel has become overly reliant on fixing stories after filming rather than before cameras begin rolling.
That strategy can work—but it also introduces enormous risk, particularly on a film carrying the weight of the MCU’s future.
The Stakes Couldn’t Be Higher
Avengers: Doomsday isn’t just another Marvel movie.
It’s intended to serve as the franchise’s next major crossover event following the departures of many of the original Avengers and the mixed reception to much of the Multiverse Saga.
Disney is reportedly counting on the return of Robert Downey Jr.—this time as Doctor Doom—and the Russo Brothers to reignite excitement around the MCU.

If the rumors are accurate, Marvel is asking editors to assemble one of the largest ensemble casts in blockbuster history from footage captured while the screenplay itself was still evolving.
Of course, post-production can dramatically reshape a film, and history is filled with movies that overcame troubled productions to become critical and commercial successes.
But until Marvel proves otherwise, reports like these are unlikely to inspire confidence among fans who have already expressed concerns about the direction of the franchise.
Whether these rumors ultimately prove accurate or not, one thing is certain: all eyes will be on Avengers: Doomsday when audiences finally get to see whether Marvel can pull off another cinematic event—or whether the behind-the-scenes turbulence was a warning sign all along.
