When Disney announced that it would not renew its deal for the international streaming rights to Doctor Who, the BBC assured fans that the long-running series would continue. As part of the agreement, Disney had contributed to the show’s production budget, suggesting the series could face new challenges moving forward.

Now, according to The Sun, a promised 2026 Doctor Who Christmas special may have an even bigger problem — no one wants to play the Doctor.
A Role Once Considered Television Royalty
Since Doctor Who debuted in 1963, the character has been portrayed by 14 different actors, depending on how fans choose to count. Historically, the role has been one of the most desirable jobs in British television. However, many fans feel recent seasons have leaned too heavily into identity politics and convoluted lore. During Ncuti Gatwa’s most recent run as the Doctor, ratings for the series hit historic lows.
The combined effect may be why actors are now reportedly reluctant to take the lead in a Doctor Who Christmas special.
BBC Promised a Christmas Special Despite Disney Exit
Disney announced last October that it would not renew its contract for Doctor Who. In response, Lindsay Salt, Director of Drama for the BBC, released a statement. After thanking Disney, she said, “The BBC remains fully committed to Doctor Who, which continues to be one of our most loved dramas, and we are delighted that Russell T Davies has agreed to write us another spectacular Christmas special for 2026.”

However, an insider reportedly told The Sun that despite reassurances about an upcoming Doctor Who Christmas special, “there’s been no confirmation from execs about when that will be.” The source added, “The problem is that they have found it difficult to find anyone who’ll take on the part of the 16th Time Lord, partly because it now feels like a role that comes with all the baggage of the most recent series.”
Notably, the most recent season ended with Gatwa’s Doctor regenerating into Billie Piper, who previously played Rose, one of the Doctor’s companions. Critics argued the moment felt like stunt casting and conflicted with established lore. The new rumors suggest Davies and the BBC may not be pursuing that storyline moving forward.

However, The Sun also reports that if a Doctor Who Christmas special fails to come together, Piper could potentially return for an Easter episode in 2027.
Fans Are Still Waiting for Answers
There have been 16 Doctor Who Christmas specials since the series returned in 2005. While the show’s ratings have declined significantly in recent years, the absence of a 2026 special would likely not go unnoticed. The issue is further highlighted by the fact that the BBC already promised one.

With no confirmation that the Christmas special is currently in production — or has been canceled — fans are left to speculate. Online debate surrounding who could play the next Doctor has largely centered on Billie Piper, the return of a previous actor, or even a soft reboot of the entire series. The growing question now is whether actors still view the role as desirable.
Christmas is only seven months away. If the BBC cannot secure a new Doctor soon, the future of one of Britain’s most iconic television franchises could become increasingly uncertain. What was once considered a career-defining role may now be facing an identity crisis of its own.
