The possibility of Avengers: Secret Wars being split into two films appears increasingly likely. It’s a rumor that’s been circulating since May 2025, when sources told WDW Pro that the Russo Brothers and Marvel want to make Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars into a trilogy. At the time, Pro questioned if there were growing concerns at Marvel about the introduction of Doctor Doom and the overall health of the franchise.

On Friday morning, John Rocha of The Hot Mic podcast said that he is hearing from his sources, who told him that Doomsday could run for three hours and that Marvel is considering splitting Secret Wars into two parts. “But we’ve heard that already,” Rocha added. “So I don’t know if there’s anything big that’s reported there.”

Rocha’s co-host, scooper Jeff Sneider, said that he hadn’t heard that, but agreed that it’s possible. They noted that Doomsday is expected to be over three hours long. If the narrative requirements of Secret Wars are even more substantial, breaking the last film into two parts would give the Russos more time to wrap up the character arcs. It would also give Marvel time to delay launching the next phase of the MCU.

Adjusting the Trajectory

Further supporting the rumor is a report from June 18, 2025 in Variety that Marvel was scheduled to release an untitled movie on Dec. 15, 2028. At the time, Pro noted that Doomsday and Secret Wars are scheduled for release in December 2026 and 2027. A third Avengers film in December 2028 would be a logical project to fill the new slot.

Variety added that “Secret Wars is meant to be the finale of the Multiverse Saga, after which Marvel is expected to pivot to a saga centered around characters inherited in Disney’s 2019 acquisition of 20th Century Fox: the X-Men.” So while Rocha’s latest insights may be nothing new, they suggest that Marvel has been adjusting its trajectory for some time.

That said, splitting Secret Wars into two films and creating an Avengers trilogy may not just be a concession to narrative needs. It may also be Disney’s attempt at mitigating the financial risk of the films.

What the Avengers Franchise Needs to Succeed

The three Marvel films released in 2025, Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts*, and Fantastic Four: First Steps, all underperformed at the box office. Not only were they likely losses for the studio, but they were also intended to build the Marvel brand leading up to Doomsday. While the marketing for the next Avengers movie has been surprisingly successful, the budget for the movie is believed to be massive.

If the MCU hopes to continue with sequels and inevitable resets involving new actors filling the roles of established characters, the upcoming Avengers films need to make money. Splitting the grand finale into two films—a move that Disney has already created space for on the calendar—could be a means of maximizing box-office returns.

Pro said in May that the new, third movie may be titled Avengers: Forever. Whether the MCU goes on indefinitely, or if this is doom for the franchise, may hinge on how audiences respond to a two-part Secret Wars.
