The latest swirling rumors out of the UK paint a turbulent picture for Doctor Who, as gossip sites and major outlets alike speculate that lead actor Ncuti Gatwa may have been quietly fired from the series following a disastrous ratings decline and a rumored controversial political statement.

Doctor Who Bi-Generation

The BBC has denied Gatwa’s departure, but insiders are telling a very different story—one that suggests both the BBC and Disney+ are rethinking their investment in the long-running sci-fi franchise.

BBC Denies It, But Rumors Say Gatwa’s Out

It all began with Gatwa’s sudden withdrawal from the UK’s Eurovision results segment—an event watched by over 160 million people globally. The Doctor Who star was expected to read the UK’s vote results but abruptly pulled out without explanation. Shortly afterward, speculation emerged that Gatwa’s exit was politically motivated, as he has been an outspoken supporter of Palestine and only stepped back after Israel qualified for the Eurovision final.

This decision reportedly blindsided BBC executives and ignited internal backlash. According to The Sun, executives were “incredibly disappointed,” calling Gatwa’s actions “incredibly embarrassing” given his position as one of the network’s most high-profile faces. The outlet doubled down with a headline declaring “EXTERMINATED!”—suggesting Gatwa’s time as the Time Lord is already over.

Ratings Collapse May Have Sealed the Deal

Politics aside, the numbers haven’t done Gatwa any favors. The current season of Doctor Who is suffering the worst viewership in the show’s 60+ year history.

Doctor Who

The first five episodes of Season 2 have performed dismally, with the lowest-rated episode yet—Episode 4—drawing just 1.5 million viewers. Even when compared to the much-criticized Jodie Whittaker era, the decline is steep.

For context:

  • Jodie Whittaker Season 13 Avg (First 4 Episodes): 5.0 million
  • Ncuti Gatwa Season 1 Avg (First 4 Episodes): 3.1 million
  • Ncuti Gatwa Season 2 (Ep 1–5): Dropped as low as 1.5 million

These figures represent a catastrophic drop for a show that once pulled in blockbuster TV numbers under David Tennant, Matt Smith, and Peter Capaldi.

Disney+ and BBC Reassess Future of the Franchise

Compounding the drama are reports that Disney+—which provided over $100 million in backing—is not expected to renew the series for a third season. Fan forums are active with rumors that Doctor Who may be paused entirely while some rumors persist that Gatwa has already filmed a regeneration scene for his exist. That would suggest the BBC does not yet have a replacement actor locked in, and may be preparing to mothball the franchise until a new strategy emerges.

Additionally, rumors suggest the BBC is actively seeking new international partners to co-finance future seasons—potentially a sign that Disney has pulled back entirely from the project.

Russell T Davies Teases “Epic and Personal” Finale

Despite the growing firestorm, showrunner Russell T Davies, who many believe has steered the show he restarted in 2005 directly into the iceberg, appears publicly unfazed.

In the latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine, Davies teased a bombshell of a season finale, calling it “wilder than it’s ever been before” with major lore-altering events involving Gallifrey, the Doctor, and the Rani. He also promised “very unexpected turns” and a climax that is both “epic” and “deeply personal.”

Yet many fans aren’t convinced, especially as social media commentary continues to criticize the show’s turn toward ideological storytelling over character-driven science fiction.

What’s Next for Doctor Who?

At present, the BBC maintains that no final decisions have been made and insists Season 2 will run its full course. But the growing pile of red flags—including plummeting ratings and the Eurovision controversy—has industry watchers bracing for an announcement sooner rather than later.

For longtime fans of Doctor Who, it’s a sobering moment. The once-iconic series may be headed back into hiatus—and if the rumors are true, it might be doing so without the Doctor even regenerating.

Next one will be nonbinary crippled Black woman having Down syndrome with 5000 IQ. If there will be next one. BBC main shows from Top Gear to Doctor Who have abysmal ratings. They completely destroyed and burned shows that were popular world wide and brought billions upon billions of pounds/euros/pounds again and actually made BBc worldwide company with lauded comedy and amazind documents… Now it’s just full of woke 3rd rate propaganda and boring shows. Eve the damn Netflix has better animated shows than anything BBC produces.

All I do now is consume the best from the past, that I’d neglected prior. Dr. Who is right up that alley. Yet, its present output is so tainted, that I have no desire to dig deeper into …. Dr. Who. Not too interested, presently.
