In a surprising (and perhaps not unwelcomed) turn of events for Star Trek fans, a new rumor suggests that Paramount+ has already pulled the plug on Season 2 of the upcoming series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, even though Season 1 has yet to air. The claim, originating from a YouTube podcast called Tachyon Pulse and amplified by fan sites, points to dissatisfaction from studio executives and high production costs as the primary reasons.
Many also surmise the first trailer’s massive like to dislike ratio has something to do with it.

However, with no official confirmation from Paramount or the show’s producers, this remains speculative amid the franchise’s ongoing evolution under new ownership.
The Rumor’s Origins and Details
The rumor first surfaced on the Tachyon Pulse Podcast, a YouTube channel focused on Star Trek discussions. According to the host, an unnamed source revealed that Skydance Media—now overseeing Paramount’s content following a recent merger—has reviewed early edits of Starfleet Academy Season 1 and found them underwhelming. The series is reportedly “massively expensive,” prompting executives to reconsider committing to a second season before gauging audience reception.

This scenario echoes the fate of Star Trek: Prodigy, another Kurtzman-era series that was canceled by Paramount after its first season and later picked up by Netflix. Under Alex Kurtzman’s production company, Secret Hideout, Star Trek projects must first be pitched to Paramount, but if rejected, they can be shopped elsewhere. The podcast speculates that Starfleet Academy could follow a similar path, potentially leading to an embarrassing setback for Kurtzman, who co-showruns the series.

Adding fuel to the fire, the rumor’s timing coincides with backlash to the show’s first teaser trailer, released at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2025. The trailer, featuring a youthful cast and themes of coming-of-age in the 32nd century, has garnered over 30,000 dislikes on YouTube compared to just 7,000 likes. Critics and fans have labeled it “disastrous,” accusing it of straying too far from traditional Star Trek elements like exploration and philosophy in favor of teen drama tropes.
Show’s Background and Current Status
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy was officially greenlit in March 2023 as part of Kurtzman’s expanded Star Trek Universe on Paramount+.
Set in the 32nd century—following the events of Star Trek: Discovery—the series follows a new class of cadets at the reopened Starfleet Academy, navigating friendships, rivalries, and a mysterious threat to the Federation. The ensemble cast includes Kerrice Brooks, Bella Shepard, George Hawkins, Sandro Rosta, Karim Diané, and Zoë Steiner, alongside veterans such as Holly Hunter as the academy’s chancellor, Paul Giamatti as the Season 1 villain, and recurring appearances from Robert Picardo, Tig Notaro, Oded Fehr, and She-Hulk’s Tatiana Maslany.

Production on Season 1 began in August 2024 at Pinewood Studios in Toronto and wrapped in February 2025. Notably, the show received an early Season 2 renewal in October 2024, before filming even started on the first, signaling strong initial confidence from Paramount. By July 2025, reports indicated that work on Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Season 2 had already begun, with the series slated to premiere in early 2026.
Despite these milestones, the Star Trek franchise has faced turbulence. The Skydance-Paramount merger, finalized earlier in 2025, has sparked broader rumors of a potential “reboot” or hiatus for the Kurtzman-led shows. Series like Star Trek: Strange New Worlds have been confirmed to end after Season 5, and fan sites have speculated about cancellations across the board to make way for new directions.
Fan Reactions and Industry Context
The rumor has spread quickly through fan communities, particularly on sites like Cosmic Book News. On Reddit and other forums, discussions range from skepticism to concern, with some users pointing to the trailer’s poor reception as a possible omen.

One CBR article from July 2025 expressed worries that the show “may already be dead” despite its two-season order, citing the merger and shifting priorities at Paramount.
However, major outlets like Variety, Deadline, and The Hollywood Reporter have not reported any cancellation, instead focusing on positive updates such as the trailer’s release and cast additions.

The broader context includes Paramount’s financial challenges and the streaming industry’s belt-tightening. If the rumor holds, it could indicate Skydance’s intent to pivot away from expensive, underperforming projects, a descriptor that describes much of Kurtzman’s Star Trek projects.
What Happens Next?
As of August 4, 2025, neither Paramount+ nor Alex Kurtzman has commented on the rumor.
With Season 1 post-production underway and a 2026 premiere on the horizon, fans will likely have to wait for official announcements or early reviews to see if the series lives up to expectations.

In the meantime, the Star Trek Universe continues with Strange New Worlds and other projects in development. Whether Starfleet Academy Season 2 becomes a casualty of corporate changes or defies the odds remains to be seen, but for now, this rumor serves as a reminder of the franchise’s precarious position in a rapidly evolving media landscape.

Kurtzman needs to be put on the unemployment line right next to Kevin Fiege. He can take his sauna pal, JJ Abrams, along with him.
The entertainment industry is still making DEI / Woke slop. Fail.

I do not trust the host of Tachyon Pulse. A while back, he had a thumbnail for his YouTube Channel that stated that Kurtzman had been fired from Star Trek. I called him on it. He said that he never said that. I said, “Then why did you put that in your thumbnail?” (Click bait obviously.) His attention to detail isn’t all that great and he reports rumors as facts, IMHO.
