Travel, parks, tourism and trips for fun are far more fun when you’re feeling good! A theme park just isn’t quite as enjoyable when you’re not at your best. Join John Golf as he discusses how he enjoys the best of both worlds: eating delicious foods AND staying in shape for travel!

While I putt around the USA, you have probably taken note that this guy really likes to eat. I do!!!! The only way that I can keep my weight under control is by exercising every day and being deliberate with my eating habits. Taking days off from exercise is very rare. I try to eat right for six of the seven days in a week. I have greater success with weight control when I stay focused and disciplined.

Health

As I quickly approach my 55th birthday, I feel awesome. I’m very fortunate that I currently take no medications. My  weight more than I should be carrying and am in the process of shedding pounds since the beginning of 2022. I’ve lost close to 30 pounds. When I get discouraged, I go pick up a 30 pound dumbbell and that puts things into perspective. I want to travel and go on many more adventures so I’m going to share what has worked for me.

Diet

I am trying to stay on a Keto-friendly diet. It has worked really well the first couple of months of this new year. I have plateaued because of too many days of “cheating.” I’m eating a lot of farm fresh eggs from my family in Southeast Tennessee. Every week we make a small trip to see my wife’s family on the farm. They have about 20 chickens that lay eggs. They have so many eggs that we have been able to share some of them with other family members and neighbors. With warmer spring days ahead, it’s time to clean up the grills and cook over open fires. What a treat! I try to make sure my plate has some green-leafy veggies.

Exercise

When talking with my doctor a few years ago about my exercise, he said that I was getting to the age where I needed to be looking at low-impact exercises and weight-training. He suggested walking instead of running. He obviously hasn’t seen my running. I borrowed my term for running from Coach Roach, a teacher/coach in Clayton County, Georgia back in 1991. We had finished painting some areas in a middle school and he said that once he was finished he had to go get in his fat-man shuffle. Please don’t confuse it with the fat man truffle shuffle that was made famous in The Goonies. That’s what my running has been called ever since.

I was already walking about four to five miles a day last year. Not getting the results I was looking for by walking, I knew that if I wanted the scale to move more drastically, I would have to pick up the intensity. I started implementing a little running into each walk and gradually increasing the running lengths. As of this morning, I shuffled for about four miles and then walked another two. Tomorrow I will run for three minutes and walk for nine minutes until I have completed my six miles.

I also have picked up on my golf activities. Going to the driving range and hitting close to hundred golf balls gives me a chance to improve my game and increase my heart rate. My next goal is to start walking nine holes so I get even more miles in for the day.

Let me know what has worked for you. Please feel free to share exercises, diet tips or any other activities that will help burn the excess calories. I wish you good health and great fun as 2022 keeps trucking on.
