Ryan Gosling Had Discussions With Marvel to Play Ghost Rider

Ryan Gosling was recently asked about the possibility of playing Ghost Rider in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. “I don’t know what to say,” he admitted. “Some discussions have been had—it’s a complicated situation.”

The comments came during an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. Host Josh Horowitz jokingly claimed he had done everything in his power to secure Gosling the role. “You’re not working hard enough,” Gosling replied. When pressed on whether there was any real chance of him taking on the role, he added, “We keep hope alive.”

Gosling’s remarks may offer a glimpse into Marvel’s casting considerations as the studio continues expanding its cinematic universe. In 2024, he told Horowitz that taking on the role of Ghost Rider would be “amazing.” Still, his recent comments suggest that any progress toward a casting decision is moving slowly.

Gosling’s Track Record and Upcoming Projects

So far, Gosling has yet to anchor a long-running franchise. While The Nice Guys and The Fall Guy both seemed primed for sequels, their underwhelming box office returns have made follow-ups unlikely. A sequel to The Gray Man is reportedly in development at Netflix, though its future remains uncertain.

Even so, Gosling remains a proven draw for audiences. Early box office projections for Project Hail Mary suggest a strong opening. Additionally, he’s set to lead Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter in 2027—a role that could mark his first true franchise commitment. If that film proves successful, it may limit his ability to juggle multiple major properties at once.

If cast as Ghost Rider, Gosling would likely be committed to both standalone films and Avengers-style team-ups.

Ghost Rider’s MCU History

Nicolas Cage portrayed Johnny Blaze in two Ghost Rider films that existed outside the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In an interesting bit of overlap, Gosling’s wife, Eva Mendes, appeared in the first installment—giving him a personal, if indirect, connection to the franchise.

While Blaze has yet to appear in the MCU, Ghost Rider has technically made the jump to Marvel’s interconnected world. The Robbie Reyes version of the character was featured in several episodes of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., marking the Spirit of Vengeance’s only on-screen presence within the MCU to date.

Fans have long suggested Gosling for the role in future adaptations, due in part to his resemblance to the comic book version of Johnny Blaze. Just as importantly, Gosling has demonstrated the range to embody both brooding, tormented figures and self-assured stuntmen—qualities central to the character’s dual identity.

Marvel’s Current Focus

Marvel’s current focus appears to be on Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars. Both films are expected to introduce and establish new versions of the X-Men, suggesting the studio is prioritizing mutants over supernatural heroes like Ghost Rider and Blade—for now.

Whether Ryan Gosling ultimately gets his chance to play Ghost Rider remains an open question. His comment that “we keep hope alive” suggests the door hasn’t been closed, even if progress has been slow. For now, fans will have to wait and see whether those early conversations with Marvel ever ignite into something more concrete.

Should Marvel eventually pivot toward its darker, supernatural side, the studio may not have to look far for a willing lead actor.
