When you hear the name Sam Elliott, you probably associate his name with pictures of the wild west. Many of the movies and projects he has played are of a typical cowboy that has been portrayed for many decades. Recently, he was asked his opinion on the new movie “The Power of the Dog”. Here are a few comments and responses regarding his very hot takes:

That’s What He Said

From Morgan Sung of NBC News:

Sam Elliott slammed the Oscar-nominated film “The Power of the Dog” in an interview on Marc Maron’s podcast “WTF.”

Elliott, who was nominated for an Academy Award for his role in “A Star Is Born” and stars in the Paramount+ Western series “1883,” bristled when Maron asked him on Monday’s podcast whether he liked “The Power of the Dog.”

“You want to talk about that piece of s—?” Elliott said when Maron brought up the Netflix film.

He went on to say:

“What … does this woman from down there … New Zealand, know about the American West?” Elliott asked. “And why … did she shoot this movie in New Zealand and call it Montana and say, ‘This is the way it was?’ That rubbed me the wrong way, pal.” (Where the …’s are, those have replaced expletives).

He said he just came from Texas, “where I was hanging out with families, not men, but families, big, long, extended, multiple-generation families that made their living and their lives were all about being cowboys.”

He said he just came from Texas, “where I was hanging out with families, not men, but families, big, long, extended, multiple-generation families that made their living and their lives were all about being cowboys.”

Elliott likened the cowboys in “The Power of the Dog” to Chippendales dancers.

“They’re all running around in chaps and no shirts. There’s all these allusions to homosexuality throughout the f—— movie,” he said.

What Is This Movie About?

Sung of NBC News:

Jane Campion’s neo-Western psychodrama, which is nominated for best picture, follows a Montana rancher, a closeted gay man battling his own toxic masculinity played by Benedict Cumberbatch.

This is what Elliott and Marc Maron said, according to Savannah Walsh of Vanity Fair:

“That’s what all these f..in’ cowboys in that movie looked like,” Elliott replied. “They’re all runnin’ around in chaps and no shirts. There’s all these allusions to homosexuality throughout the f..in’ movie.” Maron replied, “Yeah, I think that’s what the movie’s about.” (Benedict Cumberbatch’s character, Phil Burbank, is a closeted homosexual man.)

That’s What She Said

Mark Malkin of Variety:

Director Jane Campion didn’t hold back Saturday night at the DGA Awards when asked for her response to caustic and homophobic comments that veteran actor Sam Elliott made recently about Campion’s Oscar contender “The Power of the Dog.”

“I’m sorry, he was being a little bit of a B-I-T-C-H. He’s not a cowboy; he’s an actor,” Campion told Variety before the ceremony. “The West is a mythic space and there’s a lot of room on the range. I think it’s a little bit sexist.”

Elliott, who is known for his work in Westerns, criticized aspects of Campion’s take on a Western thriller during his recent guest appearance on Marc Maron’s “WTF” podcast. Elliott flatly called the Netflix drama “a piece of s..t” and questioned “where’s the Western in this Western?” Elliott asked. He took aim at star Benedict Cumberbatch as well.

Campion told Variety that she takes a more expansive view of the Western genre, and that she flatly views Elliott’s crude criticism as a slight against her as a female artist.

“When you think about the number of amazing Westerns made in Spain by (director) Sergio Leone,” she said. “I consider myself a creator. I think he thinks of me as a woman or something lesser first, and I don’t appreciate that.”

Please feel free to share your thoughts on Mr. Elliott’s or Ms. Campion’s points of view.

Be blessed and keep streaming!!!
