Only at Walt Disney World could something this outrageous happen—a robbery straight out of a Hollywood heist film. In the early hours of Monday morning, a thief in scuba gear allegedly robbed Paddlefish at Disney Springs and then swam away and escaped. Authorities say he made off with between $10,000 and $20,000 before vanishing into the waters surrounding the restaurant.

The surreal crime is making national headlines, not just for the stolen money but for the sheer audacity of the method. A waterfront restaurant, scuba gear, and a quick two-minute hit: this is the stuff of movies, not real-life Orlando.
What Went Down
According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office report, the incident unfolded just after midnight when Paddlefish had closed to guests but employees were still inside counting the night’s earnings. That’s when the scuba-clad suspected thief struck at the heart of Disney Springs.
“The man approached through the water, wearing scuba gear and a wetsuit,” according to WFTV. “He forced his way into the manager’s office, where employees were preparing cash deposits.”

Inside the office, two staff members were confronted and ordered into a corner. Reports indicate the scuba thief told the Disney Springs cast members to close their eyes and, according to investigators, tied them up before making his escape.
Despite the tense situation, the robber never brandished a weapon. The employees, though shaken, were not physically harmed. After freeing themselves, they immediately called 911.
An Underwater Getaway
The heist was over in less than two minutes.
Investigators believe the man returned to the pond behind Paddlefish, slipped back into his scuba equipment, and swam away under cover of darkness. For Disney Springs—a shopping and dining district known for strict security and constant surveillance—the idea that someone could disappear into the water undetected is raising eyebrows.

Witnesses described the suspect as slim, around 5’10”, wearing tight clothing and a blue beanie. Security cameras reportedly caught him spray-painting one of the cameras, suggesting forethought and preparation.
Disney’s Immediate Response
Incredibly, Paddlefish reopened for business later that same day at noon. Guests strolling through Disney Springs would have had no idea a brazen scuba thief had initiated a robbery just hours before.

Disney has not released a statement, but law enforcement confirms the investigation is active. Large portions of the official report remain redacted, a sign that authorities are holding back details that could help them track the suspect.
Not Your Run-of-the-Mill Robbery
This is not your run-of-the-mill restaurant theft. Disney Springs is supposed to be one of the most secure retail and dining districts in the country. Deputies patrol constantly, Disney’s own private security works around the clock, and cameras are everywhere. Yet somehow, a man in scuba gear infiltrated a major restaurant, robbed it, and escaped underwater.
For guests, it raises serious questions about how much can really be protected in a sprawling entertainment complex. If an unarmed thief can pull this off, what else is possible?

For Disney, it’s a PR nightmare. The optics of this “Disney Springs scuba thief” aren’t just bad—they’re unforgettable. Disney has already been dealing with controversies in the parks; now they’re dealing with the headline that a scuba-clad criminal thief turned one of their Disney Springs dining venues into the setting for a real-life crime caper.
The Hunt Continues
As of now, the Disney Springs scuba thief is still at large. Authorities are reviewing surveillance, interviewing witnesses, and piecing together how the suspect managed to stage such an unusual heist without being detected until after he was gone.

It’s not every day that Central Florida law enforcement is tasked with tracking down a criminal who vanishes into the water like a movie villain. For now, the Disney Springs robbery stands as one of the strangest crimes in recent Orlando memory—and it may be some time before anyone knows who was behind the mask and wetsuit.
