All Hail Shadow, Sonic Fans! After much speculation surrounding a possible announcement of a new Sonic the Hedgehog game during Sony PlayStation’s State of Play, it was announced that indeed a new Sonic project is coming and very, very soon!

The game in question is a port/remaster of 2011’s Sonic Generations, one of the best selling and most highly acclaimed games in the “generation” defining Sonic series!
Sonic Generations came out at a time in which Sonic games were in a bit of a slump with fans and critics. Sonic’s post Dreamcast ventures on non-Sega platforms received very mixed receptions largely due to a leadership change with Sega’s new parent company focusing more on brand recognition than extra time put into game development.
2003’s Sonic Heroes saw only one developer overseeing the final levels of the game, the Game Boy Advance’s Sonic Genesis came with a choppy frame rate and the infamous Sonic 06 speaks for itself!

However, one of the most memorable parts of this era was the famous 2005 title Shadow the Hedgehog who’s opening cutscene is still famous to this day. The introduction and game at large feature’s Shadow the Hedgehog armed with a machine gun, an angsty soundtrack featuring the band “Crush 40” and the most swearing ever seen in a video game aimed at 10 and up!
While this game became cemented with the “bad era” of Sonic games at the time, this edgier take on the Sonic Universe would become one of the most memorable and loved moments of the series, despite all the backlash as many saw this as a “Jumping the Shark” moment for the series.
Shadow the Hedgehog’s character as the “edgy, but deep and strong moraled” anti-hero has caused him to remain as one of the most popular Sonic characters with kids. Which leads to overall excitement for the newly announced title.

Sonic X Shadow Generations is a semi remaster of the beloved classic, Sonic Generations. The original game united classic and, at the time, modern Sonic fans in a game that featured 90s Sonic meeting up with his future self in a convoluted time travel plot that left many players satisfied by its tight controls, gripping gameplay and a spectacle of levels from Sonic’s many years and games.
The remaster brings a twist by bringing fan favorite, Shadow the Hedgehog into the mix. Shadow will be playing on the “Space Colony Ark” from 2001’s Sonic Adventure 2 as well as a city level that could be “Westopolis’ ‘ from 2005’s Shadow the Hedgehog.
The game will also feature the return of villain characters, Black Doom, who was the antagonist of Shadow the Hedgehog and has not been seen in a Sonic game in nearly 20 years. As well as the BioLizard, who was the main threat of Sonic Adventure 2 on Dreamcast. The BioLizard was also a boss in the more overlooked Nintendo 3DS version of Sonic Generations.

Takashi Izuka the Creative Officer on Sonic Team stated, “With Sonic x Shadow Generations, we wanted to bring Sonic Generations to PS5 and PS4 while pairing a brand-new Shadow storyline to crossover with the original story.”
He added, “With Shadow’s portion of the title, players will get to know him more as a character and understand his motivations. It will create the ultimate celebration of Classic Sonic, Modern Sonic, and Shadow gameplay that all fans will surely enjoy.”

Fans are sure to be happy as this is the first time the Shadow the Hedgehog emblem, seen on the Shadow the Hedgehog video game’s box art and title has been used for the character, in a very, very long time.
Shadow’s inclusion is widely seen as a very smart move by Sega. Shadow will be making his film debut in the upcoming “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” set to release this year. Hayden Christianson, famous for portraying Anakin Skywalker in Star Wars: Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith is highly rumored to be voiced the titular character. The renaissance of the Star Wars prequels which spanned from 1999 to 2005 in popularity is a strong reason this possible casting could really land with movie goers and Sonic gamers alike.
Hayden had previously contributed to video games in the 2005 Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith video game as a consultant on lightsaber combat and the Anakin Skywalker characters, despite not reprising his role as the character.
