Apparently, fans have had enough of Marvel and the MCU on Disney+. As subscriber growth stalls domestically, ratings plunge.
Kevin Feige, your experiment is failing. She-Hulk failed to make Nielsen’s Top Ten for its debut week. That’s the first time a live action Marvel show on Disney+ failed to crack any top ten list for ratings. To give you an idea of how bad that is, even Ms. Marvel managed to debut in the top ten. Even Stranger Things that ended in July is still in the top ten. The ratings for She-Hulk are so bad that we’re not even being given numbers for how bad they are… because they’re too low for Nielsen to include them in the roundup.
Wow.
From Cosmic Book News:
Much like Ms. Marvel, the She-Hulk ratings are also in the gutter where it’s actually worse as She-Hulk is the first Marvel show on Disney Plus not to make any of Nielsen’s Top 10 lists.
The first episode of She-Hulk, which also featured Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk, debuted on August 18 on Disney Plus.
Nielsen released its ratings for the week of August 15-21 where She-Hulk is not listed and even gets beat out by the kids animated series Bluey on Disney Plus, and nine Netflix shows.
All of this continues a pattern that should be very concerning to Disney. If they don’t course correct, the have a real chance of lowering viewership even farther as shows like Ms. Marvel, The Book of Boba Fett and She-Hulk falter majorly. And from what we’re hearing about Andor, we expect yet another show that divides viewers rather than excites as many as possible.
How that seems like a winning strategy going forward, we haven’t quite grasped.
And a recent quote from Anu Valia in THR sheds more light on just why Marvel — or Disney — might want to get a hold on this issue pretty quick:
“It was such a collaborative, creative experience, which is maybe something I didn’t realize going in. You think of Marvel as this huge machine, but it’s really not. Kevin [Feige] cares so much, but there was more freedom than I really expected to have,” Valia tells The Hollywood Reporter.
Maybe it’s time for that caring to translate into delivering high quality content back to the fans.
