Recent rumors surrounding defense efforts for Nick Reiner gained some validity this week after new reporting revealed that two of his siblings have stopped funding his private legal representation as he faces first-degree murder charges in Los Angeles.
According to a report from the New York Post, siblings Romy Reiner, 28, and Jake Reiner, 34, have cut off financial support for their brother’s private attorney as the high-profile case continues to unfold. Nick Reiner, 32, has pleaded not guilty to charges that he fatally stabbed his parents, filmmaker Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, inside the family’s Brentwood home in December.
Private Attorney Withdraws as Public Defender Steps In
The Nick Reiner defense strategy initially involved high-profile criminal defense attorney Alan Jackson, who was reportedly hired shortly after the killings. However, Jackson later withdrew from the case following what was described as an undisclosed disagreement.
At the time, many suspected Jackson withdrew due to funding issues, but the attorney declined to confirm those rumors.

In the meantime, a public defender has been appointed to represent Reiner. Deputy Public Defender Kimberly Greene appeared in court on his behalf Monday when he formally entered his not guilty plea to first-degree murder charges.
While the public defender’s office declined to comment publicly, the shift in representation marks a notable development in the case, particularly given the family’s reported decision to stop financing private counsel.
Family Distance Becomes Public
Sources cited in the report indicated that Romy and Jake Reiner are not participating in their brother’s legal strategy.
“Nick’s defense is Nick’s defense. They’re not involved,” a source told TMZ regarding the siblings’ stance.

The move illustrates an apparent family divide following the shocking killings that stunned Hollywood late last year.
Death Penalty Still on the Table
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman told reporters after Monday’s arraignment that prosecutors have not ruled out seeking the death penalty if Reiner is convicted. The possibility remains notable given Rob Reiner’s well-known public opposition to capital punishment during his lifetime.

Defense May Face Additional Hurdles
Reporting also notes that Nick Reiner has previously spoken about struggles with substance abuse, addiction, and periods of instability, including homelessness years before the killings. Separate reporting has indicated he previously underwent mental health treatment and was placed under a court-approved conservatorship in 2020 that later ended.

However, specific diagnostic details and medication history have not yet been established in court filings related to the current case.
Reiner’s next court appearance is scheduled for April 29th, when a preliminary hearing date is expected to be set.
