Despite being the first actor of African-descent to receive an Oscar for a leading role (the first to receive it for any role was James Baskett for his portrayal of Uncle Remus in Song of the South), many modern film fans may be unfamiliar with Mr. Poitier’s work. In honor of his life, here are five must-see movies that defined not only his career, but which helped shape the American culture and society.

5. In the Heat of the Night (1967)

4. Separate But Equal (1991)

3. Mandela and DeKlerk (1997)

2. Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner (1967)

1. Lillies of the Field (1963)
