Fowler, who directed the previous three Sonic films, shared an image of himself seated in a director’s chair. Beside him stood a detailed Metal Sonic prop with glowing red eyes, blue armor, and red shoes. In the caption, he wrote, “And that’s a wrap on #SonicMovie4 !!!” He added, “On behalf of this amazing cast/crew, we have filmed the BEST Sonic Movie yet and can’t wait to share.”

While the film is not set to release until March 19, 2027, the post reflects the franchise’s strong momentum and growing fan anticipation.
Metal Sonic and Amy Rose Enter the Franchise
Metal Sonic first appeared in the 1993 game Sonic CD, where he kidnaps Amy Rose. Both characters were teased during the ending of Sonic 3, and it was later announced that Kristen Bell joined the cast as the pink hedgehog with a crush on Sonic. Since the two characters debuted in the same game, it makes sense that they would enter the film series together.

In the games, Metal Sonic is a robotic counterpart to Sonic. Dr. Robotnik built him to replicate Sonic’s appearance, speed, and abilities. Metal Sonic also features powerful jet engines, durable armor, advanced AI, and built-in weapon systems. The post-credits scene of Sonic 3 showed him leading an army of silver Metal Sonics.
Many fans felt Dr. Robotnik’s arc reached a natural conclusion at the end of Sonic 3. Introducing Metal Sonic in Sonic 4 could expand the franchise’s universe while staying faithful to the games. As a mechanical mirror image of Sonic, the character could also introduce new thematic possibilities.
Returning Cast and New Additions
Beyond the addition of Metal Sonic, little is known about the plot of Sonic 4.
The returning cast for the hybrid live-action and animated film includes Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic, with Colleen O’Shaughnessy returning as his sidekick, Tails. Idris Elba and Keanu Reeves will also reprise their roles as the voices of Knuckles and Shadow, respectively.

Sonic’s human allies will once again be played in live-action by James Marsden and Tika Sumpter, while Jim Carrey returns as the evil Dr. Robotnik. Lee Majdoub will also reprise his role as Robotnik’s loyal henchman, Agent Stone. New additions to the cast include Ben Kingsley, Nick Offerman, Richard Ayoade, and Matt Berry in undisclosed roles.
It remains unclear whether Metal Sonic will speak in Sonic 4, as the character has traditionally communicated through mechanical beeps and buzzing sounds, with only a few rare exceptions.
The Franchise’s Box Office Momentum
The Sonic films have performed strongly at the box office for Sega and Paramount. According to Variety, the first film exceeded expectations in 2020, earning $319 million worldwide. The next two films continued that momentum, with Sonic 2 grossing $405 million globally and Sonic 3 bringing in $422 million worldwide to date. Altogether, the franchise has surpassed $1 billion at the global box office.
Sonic 3 also holds the highest score for the franchise so far on Criticless at 82% “Most Excellent” with 164 voters.

Whether Sonic 4 can continue the franchise’s box office streak remains to be seen, though fans have responded enthusiastically to the additions of Metal Sonic and Amy Rose. Kazuyuki Hoshino, co-founder of Sonic Team and the franchise’s Creative Director, has also expressed support for bringing his creations to the big screen.
