After a two month hiatus for refurbishment, Spaceship Earth in EPCOT has reopened to full operation. With this, all park attractions are now open and operating at EPCOT ahead of the upcoming holiday season.
The ride went down for refurbishment on August 25, 2025 with fans speculating on potential updates. However, with a soft opening in mid October and returning to full operations on October 25, 2025, this turned out to be simply a maintenance refurbishment, with no outward guest facing changes.

According to WDWMAGIC, a new “fire detection system” was installed, and the ride system and infrastructure received necessary maintenance.
Classic Animatronics Work
Spaceship Earth encompasses EPCOT’S iconic geodesic sphere as well as the omnimover attraction inside the sphere, which takes guests on a brief journey through the history of how communication among humankind has evolved from the time of cave dwellers through the modern era.

On our ride through to investigate any possible updates, we noticed one thing in particular: all of the animatronics were working! From the Phoenicians who we kindly thanked for how easy it was to learn our “ABC’s”, to Gutenberg working his printing press, all of these classics were operating as they should.
This is quite unlike many of the newer, “high tech” animatronics featured in rides like Tiana’s Bayou Adventure. No matter the technology, from the guest experience perspective it’s far better to see something old still in working condition, rather than something new broken. But weren’t we also promised something new with Spaceship Earth?
The Spaceship Earth Upgrade We Never Got
This was the first refurbishment of the Spaceship Earth ride since it reopened post lockdown. Some fans of the attraction likely hoped for at least something from the updates Disney promised at the D23 Expo back in 2019, but never delivered.

As part of what was to be the greatest update to EPCOT since the park opened in 1982, Spaceship Earth was supposed to get a major overhaul, with the attraction being renamed “Spaceship Earth: Our Shared Story.”
This “reimagining” of the ride was to feature new narration, a new musical score, and new show scenes, focusing on the theme of storytelling rather than technology and invention. A new visual element called a “story light” was to guide guests through the experience. Of course, none of this ever happened.
Disney Promises Made — Promises Broken
While the exterior of the geodesic sphere received a lighting upgrade which displays nightly as the “Beacons of Magic” show, the interior ride upgrade seems to have been quietly canceled along with several other EPCOT upgrades promised, but never delivered.

Among these were a new Mary Poppins attraction in the United Kingdom area and the “Play Pavilion” that, while still announced on the monorail ride into EPCOT, remains behind a barricade as an empty, gold domed shell of the former “Wonders of Life” Pavilion.
While these cancellations were likely due to post lockdown budget cuts, it still sits odd that while Test Track received an upgrade to version 3.0, and all three of the other Walt Disney World parks are currently getting major renovations, Disney dropped the ball with EPCOT, and that’s one big ball that can’t be missed.
