WARNING: This article contains a potential major spoiler for Spider-Man Brand New Day
Marvel Studios has spent months carefully guarding one of Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘s biggest mysteries. It may have all unraveled in a matter of seconds thanks to musician Steve Lacy.
During the film’s world premiere in Los Angeles, Lacy — whose music appears on the movie’s soundtrack — was asked a seemingly harmless question about which character he was most excited for audiences to see. The interviewer even prefaced the question by explicitly asking him not to reveal any spoilers.
Unfortunately for Marvel, that warning may have come a little too late.
Steve Lacy Appears to Reveal Sadie Sink’s Secret Character
For more than a year, Marvel has refused to identify who Stranger Things star Sadie Sink is playing in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Fan speculation has ranged from Mary Jane Watson to Firestar, but one rumor has consistently remained at the top of the list: Jean Grey.
Lacy’s answer seemed to confirm exactly that.

Rather than giving a vague response, he reportedly named “Jean” before discussing the character’s role in the film, even describing her as the movie’s villain while adding that “there’s a reason to her madness.”
If accurate, the comments effectively reveal not only Sink’s identity but also a major aspect of her role in the film.
Within minutes, clips of the interview spread across social media, with Marvel fans joking that Kevin Feige might never invite Steve Lacy back to another premiere.
Marvel Had Worked Hard to Keep This Secret
The timing makes the apparent spoiler especially notable.
Just days before the premiere, Spider-Man: Brand New Day director Destin Daniel Cretton explained why Marvel had gone to such lengths to keep Sink’s character under wraps.

Speaking with Rolling Stone, Cretton said there was “a very real reason” audiences shouldn’t know who Sink was playing before seeing the movie, adding that viewers would likely appreciate having the surprise preserved once they experienced the film.
That makes Lacy’s comments particularly awkward, assuming he wasn’t intentionally attempting to misdirect fans.
Could Steve Lacy Be Wrong?
There remains one important caveat.
Marvel Studios has built an entire marketing strategy around secrecy, fake scripts, and deliberate misdirection. It is still technically possible that Lacy misunderstood what he had seen, was joking, or was intentionally feeding fans false information.
However, many fans aren’t buying that explanation.

Lacy didn’t simply mention a name. He appeared to discuss the character’s motivations and role in the story in enough detail that many online believe he had already seen the completed film or had been briefed on its plot.
Until audiences actually see Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Marvel isn’t likely to officially comment on the incident.
Social Media Has Turned the Moment Into a Meme
Rather than expressing outrage, much of the internet responded with humor.
Posts joking about Kevin Feige hunting down Steve Lacy, comparisons to Tom Holland’s infamous history of accidentally revealing Marvel secrets, and countless memes flooded X, Reddit, and Instagram almost immediately after the clip surfaced.
Ironically, the interviewer had specifically asked Lacy not to spoil anything just moments before he seemingly did exactly that.

Whether the comments ultimately prove accurate or turn out to be an elaborate fake-out, one thing is certain: Marvel’s carefully protected mystery surrounding Sadie Sink’s role is no longer much of a mystery for fans following the film online.
With Spider-Man: Brand New Day arriving in theaters this week, audiences won’t have to wait much longer to find out whether Steve Lacy accidentally spoiled one of Marvel Studios’ biggest surprises—or simply helped create one of the funniest premiere moments in recent MCU history.
