Walt Disney World has updated one of its most iconic attractions. The Magic Kingdom Railroad—known for its classic charm and relaxing grand circle tour—has temporarily adopted a new operating mode and a surprising guest star: Stitch.

As of July 7, 2025, due to major construction in Frontierland, including the development of a “Cars”-themed Piston Peak National Park and a Disney Villains Land, the Walt Disney World Railroad is now operating in a “shuttle mode.” Trains are running only between the Main Street, U.S.A. and Fantasyland stations, bypassing the currently inaccessible Frontierland Station.

To accommodate the revised route, Disney has reconfigured the seating inside the train cars. Benches now face both forward and backward, ensuring that guests can travel comfortably no matter the train’s direction—an accommodation to the change since the train now moves forward in one direction and backward on the return.

The most notable update, however, is the addition of a brand-new narration featuring Experiment 626 himself—Stitch. On the westbound trip from Main Street to Fantasyland (which runs in reverse), Stitch joins the conductor as a co-narrator. The duo banters throughout the short journey, with Stitch mispronouncing “Tomorrowland,” playfully asking to drive the train, and commenting on nearby attractions like TRON Lightcycle / Run and Astro Orbiter.

For those riding the train this summer, the new narration can only be heard on the westbound trip (Main Street to Fantasyland). So if you want to experience this change to the ride, be sure to grab a backward-facing seat to enjoy Stitch’s antics to the fullest.

History of the Magic Kingdom Railroad and Stitch in the Park

This isn’t the first time the railroad has gone into shuttle operation. A similar setup occurred between 2011 and 2012 when Fantasyland was undergoing its major transformation.

However, this latest version introduces new character-driven storytelling to the classic attraction, giving fans something different while Frontierland is under construction. While Disney hasn’t announced when the full-circuit route will return, it’s expected to resume once work on the new lands is completed.

For fans of Stitch, this change is especially notable. Although “Stitch’s Great Escape!” closed in 2018, this new role brings the mischievous alien back  without the controversial elements that once defined his now-defunct attraction. Rather than delivering jump scares or chili-dog-scented gags, Stitch now entertains guests with jokes, friendly commentary, and co-conductor energy.

Reception to the Change

Some fans of Stitch are quick to jump on board this new change. They note it as a clever way to temporarily update the railroad while its circuit has been altered for construction that will delight the children attending.

Others have reacted negatively to the change of one of the Magic Kingdom’s opening day attractions to once more inject Disney movie IP into what was once a park-centric experience during a year that has already seen several classic attractions shuttered for good.

The railroad change accommodates the construction and renovation of Frontierland, which is losing Tom Sawyer’s Island and Rivers of America to make room for a new Cars-themed area. Disney fans have also mourned the end of Muppet Vision 3D in Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Still to close this year will be Dinosaur over in Disney’s Animal Kingdom which will be re-themed to an Indiana Jones attraction.

How do you feel about the Walt Disney World railroad re-theming itself to include Stitch? Do you think it will appeal to fans and kids, or is just another corporate move that missed the mark? Let us know in the comments!
