Walt Disney World has revealed new narrative details about the Monstropolis storyline at Hollywood Studios, outlining how guests will enter the world of Pixar’s Monsters, Inc. through a civic celebration inside the fictional city.

The setting follows the events of the original Monsters, Inc. film, when the city shifted from collecting children’s screams to harvesting laughter as its primary energy source. According to Disney’s official press materials, that discovery reshaped monster society. The change in energy production also changed how monsters view humans. The land’s narrative builds directly on that turning point.

The new details also gives fans a better idea of what to expect as far as attractions, dining, and more in the upcoming Monster’s Inc-themed area.

H.U.M.A.N. Day Forms the Narrative Foundation

At the center of the Monstropolis storyline at Hollywood Studios is a citywide event called H.U.M.A.N. Day, which stands for “Humans Understand Monsters Are Nice.” Disney describes the event as the first official invitation for humans to visit Monstropolis.

Within the land’s story, monsters organize the celebration to promote understanding between species. The event allows humans and monsters to meet and share cultures.

Disney’s materials also reference a fictional Department of Human Relations. This organization helps coordinate the visit and supports interaction between residents and guests. The department represents the city’s institutional shift following the energy transition from screams to laughter, shown in the original movie.

City Locations Inspired by the Film

Disney states that the land will recreate recognizable locations from the Monsters, Inc. universe. Guests will encounter environments designed to reflect daily life in Monstropolis.

Highlighted venues include Harryhausen’s restaurant, which appeared in the original film. The Glob Theater, a prominent structure within the cityscape and a play on Shakespeare’s Globe, will replace the former Muppet*Vision theater. Disney has not released full programming details for these spaces. However, officials confirm that the setting will reflect a functioning monster metropolis shaped by its new energy model.

The Monstropolis storyline at Hollywood Studios positions guests as participants in a milestone civic moment rather than observers of past film scenes. The framing allows the land to exist as a continuation of the film’s events instead of a retelling. Disney describes the upcoming area as “the beginning of a new story” for the Monster’s Inc. franchise.

Suspended Coaster Based on the Door Vault

Among the announced attractions is a suspended roller coaster inspired by the Door Vault sequence from the film. Disney has stated that the attraction will be the first suspended coaster of its kind in a Disney park.

The coaster concept draws from the warehouse scene in which thousands of doors move along overhead tracks. Disney has not released ride layout details or a projected opening date for the land.

Development Status

Monstropolis is under development at Disney’s Hollywood Studios on the former site of Muppet*Vision 3D and nearby areas. Disney has not announced an official opening timeline.

The company’s public statements focus on the broader narrative theme of coexistence between monsters and humans. Officials describe the land as a fully realized city environment shaped by the discovery that laughter produces more energy than screams.

The Monstropolis storyline at Hollywood Studios reflects that shift in tone. Instead of fear-based training facilities, the setting centers on civic pride and cross-species understanding. Disney has indicated that additional details about attractions, dining, and entertainment will be released at a later date.
