Anticipation for the final episodes of Netflix’s Stranger Things is reaching a fever pitch. A new trailer for season 5, volume 2, released Monday morning, shows just how high the stakes have risen as the Hawkins gang confronts an apocalyptic threat.
Everything we have ever assumed about the Upside Down has been dead wrong.

Most of what is shown appears to be from early in the second volume, when the story appears to be at its lowest point. The trailer opens with the main characters facing doubts and sensing that all is lost. Will (Noah Schnapp) tells his mother, Joyce (Wynonna Ryder), “We failed. We never stood a chance.” Joyce answers, “This is not over — not by a long shot.”

Netflix is clearly aiming to set a dire tone, as the trailer shifts between positive and negative moments, but ultimately emphasizes fear. There’s no hint of levity, and the overall mood is determination in the face of impossible odds.
Upside Down and Inside Out
The focus quickly shifts to characters in surreal landscapes stepping into and exploring the Upside Down. In voiceover, Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) says, “This whole time, everything we have ever assumed about the Upside Down has been dead wrong.”
A remix of Diana Ross’s Inside Out kicks in as Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) says to Eight (Linnea Berthelsen), “Help me find him. Kill him.” She’s not pleading and she’s not asking. Eleven is preparing to go to war against Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower), who we catch glimpses of in both his human and monstrous forms.

Later on, there are shots of Eleven exercising her powers, though what she’s facing remains a mystery.
“You Die, I Die”
Meanwhile, the rest of the gang seems to be raiding a compound. Murray (Brett Gelman) says into a walkie-talkie, “It’s showtime” before crashing a cargo truck through a gate and into a hail of bullets. Nancy (Natalia Dyer), looking like Rambo straight out of First Blood: Part 2, pops out a roof hatch with a belt-fed machine gun and opens fire.

“I thought that was supposed to be the easy part,” Robin (Maya Hawke) says from inside the truck. “It was,” Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin) replies.
Fans are then treated to a series of quick cuts of terrifying imagery — demogorgons race through buildings, and people levitate in what looks like a demonic procession out of a horror film, while people run in terror. Weird energy blasts ripple over barren landscapes as Vecna intones, “It is time for a new world.”

The trailer ends with Dustin and Steve (Joe Keery) telling each other, “You die, I die.” Stranger Things fans have long feared for Steve’s safety, and this moment in the season 5 volume 2 trailer is doing nothing to calm their anxiety.
The End of an Era
Volume one of Stranger Things Season 5 debuted on November 26th and shattered Netflix’s streaming records with 59.6 million worldwide views in its first five days. The next three episodes will hit the streamer on Christmas, when kids are out of school and adults are off work.

Stranger Things is arguably one of the few remaining franchises to spark a fear of missing out and of spoilers. As these sorts of cultural moments grow increasingly rare, its grand finale on New Year’s Eve could mark the end of an era — regardless of how things turn out in Hawkins.
