John Leguizamo, the original Luigi actor in the first Mario Brothers movie, has come out with criticism for the recently announced Super Mario film for 2022. According to Leguizamo, the casting is “all white”, and does not have any “latinx” voice actors. We do not yet know the full cast for the movie, although it does seem that all currently announced actors are of a Caucasian descent. What other ethnic or racial backgrounds they may have are unknown as of publication.

While casting of individuals of all backgrounds and demographics is important, it should be noted that the film depicts Italian plumbers, anthropomorphic mushrooms, fungi princesses, and turtle-like humanoids. When the remaining cast is announced, it is hoped that people of all types will have been considered and potentially cast in the film. The movie has likewise been criticized for not featuring the traditional voice of Mario, Charles Martinet.

Despite the early issues with the film, it should be suspected that the movie is a contender for major box office success in 2022. For more information on the film, keep checking That Park Place!
