Ahead of its July 26, 2026 release, Supergirl is in rumored reshoots and now it appears that the Woman of Tomorrow is getting some help from Superman and Lobo.

The next entry in James Gunn’s Superman Saga is being directed by Craig Gillespie and based on a comic by Tom King. Star Milly Alcock was introduced as Supergirl in last summer’s Superman as an edgy and jaded young woman, and Supergirl screenwriter Ana Nogueira promises more of the same.

So far, much of the focus has been on the cosmic revenge story and Supergirl’s journey. Now, we’re hearing about an increased male presence.

Supergirl, Superman, and Lobo — Oh My!

While Lobo doesn’t appear in the book Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, King reportedly wanted the alien bounty hunter in the comic’s storyline. Since July rumors have circulated that Jason Momoa’s portrayal of the character in the movie is reportedly a hit, with Warner Bros. execs asking for more.

Recently, Scooper Daniel Richtman dropped the hint that David Corenswet is suiting up for a surprise return as Superman. Adding plausibility is the fact that where Superman’s costume was on display on the Warner Bros. Studio Tour, there’s now just a sign that reads: “Superman costume currently being used by production.”

The next Superman movie, Man of Tomorrow, isn’t in production. But if Supergirl is doing reshoots, the timing can’t be ignored. Unless Corenswet is only appearing in some sort of bookend scene, this signals a major reworking of the plot, which according to everything we’ve been told so far is fairly female-centric.

According to Variety, the movie has her traveling “across the galaxy to celebrate her 21st birthday with Krypto the Superdog. Along the way, she meets a young woman named Ruthye and winds up on a murderous quest for revenge.”

How Superman and Lobo can fit in remains to be seen. Why they might be needed to bolster interest is more apparent. Because if that creative pivot sounds familiar, it’s because we’ve seen similar course corrections attempted before.

If This Sounds Familiar…

Supergirl went into production before the release of the John Wick spinoff Ballerina. That movie was famously delayed for reshoots that brought in Keanu Reeves’ character and established the story in the Wick universe.

While Ballerina flopped at this summer’s box office, Reeves’ return may have reassured audiences that Ana de Armas wasn’t coming in as a female reboot of Wick, but as her own character. It didn’t entirely work, though the movie has a favorable 71% Rad score on Criticless with 98 voters and similarly popular scores on Rotten Tomatoes.

Furthermore, Warner Bros. may be having flashbacks to 2024’s box office disaster, Furiosa, which they distributed. Many viewers noted Furiosa was a Mad Max movie without Mad Max. Again, it was a female-led entry in a franchise that started with male characters.

There could be a legitimate concern that audiences will see a movie called Supergirl and, if the Man of Steel doesn’t feature heavily in the advertising, perceive it as a Superman replacement for girls. Alcock has never opened a movie before, and Corenswet’s Superman reportedly lost money at the box office.

But Momoa’s first Aquaman movie was a blockbuster…

If the DCU is going to survive, Supergirl needs to be a smash hit, and that means Warner Bros. can’t take any chances on misconceptions or a lack of star power.

Do you think Superman and Lobo will make Supergirl a cameo in her own movie thanks to these reshoots? Will it help? Let us know in the comments!
