There’s no final script for Taikia Waititi’s supposed Star Wars movie. He doesn’t know how it goes. Kathleen Kennedy said they were aiming for 2023 but there’s no way that could have possibly been honest.
Add this to the list of faceplants the Walt Disney Company has suffered in the last couple of weeks. And honestly, we actually can’t keep up with it all… and we’re an entertainment news website! And lest the start of this article make you believe we’re overselling some of these major issues, consider that we’re referring to a historically bad flop in Lightyear, Tim Allen criticizing Pixar, Baymax! took Disney farther into the culture war than Lightyear ever imagined, Shanghai Disney theme park opening to about a thousand guests, and an influx of rumors and sources all pointing towards an upcoming rain of pink slips newly renewed CEO Bob Chapek is reportedly ready to start handing out.
Wow.
So add this to all of that:
In an interview with the New York Times, actor, writer and director, Taika Waititi has been quoted to say that he isn’t even sure his Star Wars movie will be made… little alone hit the deadline that Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy had stated publicly!
Total Film: Star Wars Celebration has led to some very exciting news, but I would say there was a curious lack of talk about the movies. There were reports that the next movie will now be Taika Waititi’s Star Wars film. Is that correct?
Kathleen Kennedy: That’s correct.
Is that aiming for 2023?
Yeah. Well, not 2023, but late 2023.
The December 2023 release date?
We haven’t locked anything in.
The future of the movies is still in movement?
Of course, they’ve been in movement all along. As we leave the saga, we have all this great, exciting work happening on the television side that informs so much about where we’re going. We want to be very intentional about that. And we have great talent that we’re working with – people who care so deeply about what the next iteration of Star Wars is and about getting people back into movie theatres, so we can really come out with a bang. That’s important to us.
Now, what we’re finding out is the reality is so far divorced from what Kathleen Kennedy had to say, we’re willing to accept that she’s just outright fabricating nonsense. Seriously. According to Taika Waititi himself, he hasn’t written a script, he doesn’t know what the movie would be about, it’s not approved by Lucasfilm, and there seems to be so little prepared for this movie that it might as well not even have the first page devoted to its real development. One of these two people can’t be telling the truth. Either there is no movement or there is.
From the new interview out of the New York Times:
“I’m trying to write the ‘Star Wars’ idea at the moment,” he said. “I’ve got to see how that goes, because once I submit it, that might determine when it gets made or if it gets made, even.”
— Taikia Waititi to Dave Itzkoff, New York Times
You can completely wipe out whatever Kathleen Kennedy has said about 2023. If there’s no script for this movie at this point, this is late 2024 at the earliest. If Lucasfilm is going to struggle to make anything theatrical, fine… but enough of lying. This is just silly.

It might not be made if Thor Love and Thunder tanks at the box office. This is pretty much assured based on the reaction.
What “reaction”? Consumers didn’t see it yet outside of early access types and those people were pretty positive about it.
Reaction to the messed up trailers. Not good at all.
Typo alert.
“And honestly, we actually keep up with it all… and we’re an entertainment news website!”
From the context if appears that you are wanting to say that you **can’t** keep up with it all, but that’s not what you said.
Good. He should be more focused on The Incal.
You know, that comic book adaptation he was specifically chosen to direct for by the comic’s creator? One Alejandro Jodorowsky?
Does Lucasfilm control their media budget anymore? I thought that since all content creation got moved under Merchandise and Licensing, they would have to ask “mother may I” before beginning production. If true, that would be my guess as to why Waititi doesn’t know if his film will be made and KK is trying to drive up hype so she can justify the expense
Would prefer NO Star Wars movies until there’s a major reorganization at Lucasfilm. I’d rather get great Star Wars films out at a future date, than some subpar ‘content’ that the current crew only seems capable of producing.
I think it’s a blessing considering that one, he should be allowed to take his time into making sure that film is a proper comeback for Star Wars on the big screen and two, the delay will make her 3 year contract look like a waste of time. I really see this as a good thing for him and the fans.
