It was the slap heard round the world but the three seconds leading up to it are mysteriously not available. Despite the cameras rolling on actor, Will Smith, and his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, The Academy has not yet made available the recording of what led to a strike against Chris Rock. In the publicly available video, Smith is seen laughing and clapping at a joke about his wife and a reference to G.I. Jane. But the next we see of Will Smith in the publicly available video, he’s marching towards Chris Rock to strike the comedian. So what happened in those three seconds? What did Jada Pinkett Smith say to Will Smith?

Now some are pushing for The Academy to release the footage of the couple just before Will Smith goes to confront Chris Rock.
Questions that could be answered are:
- Did Jada Pinkett Smith tell Will Smith to assault Chris Rock?
- Did she tell him to do something?
- Did Smith become unhinged on his own?
Meanwhile, Chris Rock has declined to pursue charges against Will Smith, and even has gone so far as to stop a heckler from being negative about the Fresh Prince actor. It would seem that Rock not only can take a punch but he knows how to be a class-act days later as well. It’s good for Will as it may not have gone so well for him had he attempted to slap Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson or some other actor who may have responded. Jim Carrey says he would have sued Will for hundreds of millions of dollars.
“I’d have announced this morning that I was suing Will for $200 million,” Carrey told Gayle King on “CBS Mornings” on Monday. “That video’s going to be there forever. It’s going to be ubiquitous. That insult is going to last a very long time.”
If the three second clip shows it was Pinkett Smith who pushed for retalliation, it may be she who has some restitution to make for comedians everywhere facing physical threats now.
