The Batman 2 writer/director Matt Reeves gave reporters an update while at the Emmy Awards Sunday night. He was there supporting The Penguin, the HBO Max limited series set in his DC Elseworlds, which earned 24 nominations and won nine. But it was the sequel to his 2022 The Batman that was on everyone’s mind.

Talking to The Hollywood Reporter, Reeves promised, “The things that it does for his [Robert Pattinson] character, for Batman and for Bruce, have never been done before in this way.”

The Batman 2 Production Update Eases Minds

Until recently, no update on The Batman 2 has been terribly encouraging. The movie, originally expected to hit theaters by October of 2025, has been delayed twice. First in 2023 because of the WGA strike, and again in 2024 because the script was incomplete. Rumors surrounding the delays and the film’s possible cancelation reached a point where the head of DC Studios, James Gunn, finally had to address them.

“I’ll also say The Batman Part II is not canceled. That’s the other thing I hear all the time — that Batman Part II is canceled. It’s not canceled. We don’t have a script. Matt’s slow,” he told Rolling Stone.

Sunday night Reeves told THR, “It’s been a journey that is taking longer than I would’ve wanted for a lot of reasons, a lot of personal reasons, but most important reason is getting it to a place where I just felt like it was the best script we could possibly write.”

Speaking with Variety, he added, “We’ll shoot probably like April, end of April, beginning of May, something like that.”

Reeves Isn’t Sharing Any Clues

Details of the plot of The Batman 2 are decidedly not included in this latest update. But Reeves promises that, much like the first movie, it will blend comic book action and mystery.

The Penguin

Talking to THR, he said, “Obviously because of what the first movie was and what this movie is, which is so much a detective story, the idea of trying to protect the secrets of the movie is super important.” He even went so far as to send Pattinson the script in a locked pouch that required a code.

According to Reeves, Pattinson responded positively once he was able to access the script.

“I thought that he really would [like it] because the things that it does for his character,” Reeves said. “The fact that he did was incredibly encouraging.” And Pattinson isn’t the only one singing its praises.

Colin Farrell, who plays the Penguin, has also read the script, telling Deadline, “I haven’t got much to do on it, just a little bit. I read the script and it’s extraordinary.”

Unfortunately, for fans of The Penguin, Cristin Milioti’s Sofia Falcone (which won her the Emmy for Best Supporting Actress) will not be in the movie, though Reeves hasn’t ruled out her appearing in a potential The Batman 3

“Cristin’s not in this one. But that’s because we were so deep into the script by the time we were in the show, so. But we’ll see,” he told MTV

What This The Batman 2 Update Really Means

If everything remains on schedule, The Batman 2 should arrive in theaters on October 1, 2027. The returning actors will likely include Robert Pattinson, Jeffrey Wright, Andy Serkis, Colin Farrell, and Barry Keoghan, though DC Studios has yet to officially confirm the cast.

But the most important update is that the signal is clear: The Batman 2 is still getting made.
