It’s more bad news for the entertainment industry as the Nashville-based newspaper, The Tennesseean, is reporting that The Grammies have been postponed indefinitely due to the pandemic. The same thing occurred in 2021 before The Grammies aired in March when an outdoor location was determined.
“As COVID cases surge in the U.S., “Music’s Biggest Night” has been put on ice.
The 2022 Grammy Awards ceremony — previously set to return in full force to Los Angeles’ Crypto.com Arena on January 31 — has been postponed to an unspecified date due to concerns surrounding the Omicron variant.
The postponement was announced Wednesday via a joint statement from the Recording Academy and network TV partner CBS.”
A report we covered here at That Park Place on December 28th had found that media companies could lose up to a billion and a half dollars from Omicron-induced cancellations and postponements.
So as we ring in the new year, 2022 is shaping up to be something a bit more like 2021 and 2020 than many expected. That includes sharp profit losses for media companies who may have thought they had fully weathered the storm.
More entertainment cancellations and postponements are expected as the United States has not yet reached the peak of the Omicron wave, even though millions of Americans per day are being infected. Despite the huge numbers, deaths may not spike given the more mild nature of the variant as recognized by the US government.
