Is Kathleen Kennedy already out at Lucasfilm? A source for That Park Place says she’s essentially just a figurehead with a meaningless title at this point. And maybe we’re all just waiting for official confirmation she’s moved on when the timing is right for her… and Disney?

A new report from Puck News by veteran Hollywood insider Matt Belloni has reignited long-running speculation about leadership at Lucasfilm. According to Belloni, the studio is preparing for a transition that would see Dave Filoni elevated into a top creative leadership role alongside the current head of Industrial Light & Magic, Lynwen Brennan, replacing Kathleen Kennedy as the top leader at Lucasfilm. While the report frames this as a forthcoming change, the reality inside Lucasfilm may be that this transition has already occurred in all but name.

For years now, industry observers and Lucasfilm insiders have quietly suggested that Kennedy’s day-to-day involvement has been minimal. She is rarely seen publicly at the studio, seldom appears at fan-facing events outside of major announcements, and is increasingly perceived as operating remotely rather than maintaining an active, on-site leadership presence. In practice, Lucasfilm appears to have been functioning without a hands-on president for some time, raising the question of whether Kennedy currently serves more as a symbolic figurehead than an operational executive. In the past, we’ve talked with Lucasfilm employees who have told us that Kennedy is almost never seen on campus.

Creative authority at Lucasfilm has steadily shifted toward Filoni, whose influence over the Star Wars franchise is now unmistakable. From overseeing Disney+ series to shaping long-term narrative direction, Filoni already functions as the studio’s chief creative steward. Meanwhile, the reported involvement of ILM’s leadership signals a parallel emphasis on technical execution, pipeline efficiency, and production discipline — areas where Lucasfilm has faced increasing scrutiny following years of uneven theatrical results and costly streaming misfires.

Dave Filoni

In that context, Belloni’s report does not describe a sudden upheaval so much as the formal acknowledgment of an existing power structure. Kennedy’s name may still sit atop the organizational chart, but the operational and creative decisions that define Lucasfilm’s output have long since migrated elsewhere. This dynamic mirrors similar transitions across Hollywood, where legacy executives retain titles while real authority quietly consolidates under successors better aligned with current corporate priorities.

So what are Disney and Kathleen Kennedy waiting on in order to make this official? Well… it could be a couple of lifetime achievement awards… or more likely… they want to wait until after the release of The Mandalorian and Grogu movie so she might exit with a box office win. That’s far from a certainty, however. And importantly missing from the report out of Puck: there’s no mention whatsoever of Jon Favreau taking a leadership position at all!

If Kennedy is indeed largely absent, working remotely, seldom visible, and disengaged from daily studio operations, then the proposed leadership shift is less a replacement than a public confirmation of reality. For Disney and Lucasfilm, formalizing this structure could offer clarity to filmmakers, investors, and fans alike, all of whom have questioned who is truly steering one of the most valuable franchises in entertainment.

Ultimately, whether Kathleen Kennedy officially exits her role or continues to hold the title for a transitional period, the direction of Lucasfilm appears increasingly clear. The studio is already being run by a new generation of leadership. The only remaining question is how long it will take for the credits to catch up with the facts on the ground.

Christ, go or don’t go already! This constant rumor is like fan baiting – dangling the hope that the cancer is in remission only to have it surge and metastasize another organ.
