The Muppets are reportedly gearing up for live appearances aboard Disney Cruise Line as the fleet rapidly expands — a move already generating excitement among families planning a cruise vacation. But the development comes on the heels of Walt Disney World shuttering MuppetVision 3D earlier this year, erasing the final attraction personally overseen by Jim Henson himself.
So yes, the Muppets are returning to the spotlight… but not in the place most fans hoped.
A Sudden Rebound After Years of Neglect
Walt Disney World has slowly — and very publicly — pushed the Muppets out of the parks over the past decade.

The Muppets Present… Great Moments in American History vanished from Liberty Square years ago and their once-strong presence in merchandise, parades, and entertainment dwindled to almost nothing.
Most recently, Disney closed MuppetVision 3D, the last Muppets attraction that still existed in its original form.

That closure cut especially deep: MuppetVision 3D wasn’t just another show. It was the final creative project Jim Henson ever worked on, completed shortly before his passing. It also featured legendary Muppet performers like Richard Hunt and Jerry Nelson, who have since passed away.
It was a cornerstone of Muppet history, and its removal hit fans far harder than the company expected.
The Time Magazine Tease — A Big Push Coming
Journalist Chris Nashawaty spoke with Leigh Slaughter, VP of The Muppets Studio and live characters strategy for Walt Disney Imagineering, in a special Time Magazine feature.

Slaughter explained the public’s ongoing desire for the characters, saying: “They want some laughs and a little bit of joy. We’re here to make the world a whole lot happier and a little weirder.”
Nashawaty then delivered the line that’s turning heads.
“Fans may want to start booking their travel plans for next year, because they’re about to see a lot more of Kermit and company at Disney’s cruise ships and theme parks, including live appearances from the characters on land and sea.”

While the article stops short of confirming any specific Disney Cruise Line show, the implication is unmistakable: the Muppets are headed back into major Disney entertainment programming.
So What About Walt Disney World?
The future of The Muppets in Walt Disney World is already set. They’ll be appearing in the announced Muppets takeover of Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster, coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios in 2026.

That project, while exciting for some, is still a reinterpretation of an existing thrill ride — not a preservation or replacement of a Henson-era creation. Fans can celebrate the coaster overlay, but it isn’t the same as restoring Jim Henson’s last major piece of work.
It’s a comeback, but not a restoration.
A New Era on the High Seas
If anything, Disney Cruise Line may end up being the place where the Muppets truly thrive. With six new DCL ships launching between 2025 and 2031, the company needs fresh entertainment offerings that pull in families and nostalgic adults alike. And the Muppets are perfectly positioned for that role.

They appeal to multiple generations and embody timeless comedy without relying on modern identity-driven narratives. Plus Cruise Line entertainment thrives on musical, variety-style acts — which is exactly the Muppets’ wheelhouse.
The interactive Midship Detective Agency on the Disney Fantasy already features the characters, including Pépé the King Prawn, but live puppet performances with backing audio tracks would be on an entirely different level.
What This Really Means
Despite the return to Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster and the optimism around future Muppets Cruise entertainment, the core reality remains:
Walt Disney World has removed the last authentic Jim Henson attraction from its parks.

Even with a new coaster overlay on the horizon, the original creative DNA that connected fans to the Muppets is gone from the Florida parks — and that’s not a small loss.
So while the Muppets may be gearing up for a large-scale comeback across Disney Cruise Line and select areas of Disney’s Hollywood Studios, the emotional heart of their legacy — the one tied directly to Jim Henson’s final work — now exists only in memory.

Still, for fans who feared the franchise was slipping away entirely, this sudden resurgence is undeniably good news. Whether by sea or by coaster, Kermit and the gang are stepping back into the spotlight.
