Is the next Indy film the finale of three or more Hollywood mega-careers? A statement by a legendary composer suggests it could well be.
Legendary composer John Williams has confirmed that Indiana Jones 5 may very well be his last time scoring a film. Additionally, he’s added that it may also be Harrison Ford’s last starring role in movie. That would already be a major farewell in a single film, but now with Taika Waititi saying that he’s not even sure he’s making a Star Wars movie yet, it’s starting to look like Indiana Jones 5 might also be the very last outing for Kathleen Kennedy as well. If so, the final Indy might be a movie like no other with at least three huge names in the film industry calling it their swan song. Whether or not it’s a magnum opus is depending on the entire team’s execution of the archaeologist’s last big screen adventure.
At the moment I’m working on ‘Indiana Jones 5,’ which Harrison Ford — who’s quite a bit younger than I am — I think has announced will be his last film. So, I thought: If Harrison can do it, then perhaps I can, also.
— John Williams
At this time, we don’t have confirmation of that announcement. It could be that Ford made the announcement privately to other executives and Hollywood moguls. Or it could be that Williams just misremembered it. We’ll have to wait to make sure.
As for other major players like producer Steven Spielberg, we think they’ll continue right on making more movies. For some, retirement just isn’t a thing. And even though we were displeased with the way director James Mangold treated fans last year, we’re still pulling for Indiana Jones 5 to be a cinematic feat. Harrison Ford deserves such an ending.
