During a recent business trip, I had the opportunity to spend some time in a lovely part of the country I bet many do not well know. The Ozarks, however, are worthy of your time and attention.

The Ozarks, located in the central United States, is a region that covers a vast area, including parts of Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Kansas. This scenic and diverse region offers a wide range of activities and attractions, making it a popular destination for visitors from all over the world. Here are the top five things to do in the Ozarks:

Hiking and Exploring the Outdoors

The Ozarks is a beautiful region with vast natural landscapes, and one of the best ways to experience this beauty is by hiking and exploring the outdoors. The region boasts of numerous hiking trails, with some of the most popular being the Ozark Highlands Trail and the Buffalo River Trail. These trails offer hikers an opportunity to experience the natural beauty of the Ozarks, including waterfalls, caves, and wildlife.

In addition to hiking, visitors can also explore the Ozarks on horseback or by bike. Horseback riding tours take visitors through scenic trails, and bike tours offer an opportunity to explore the Ozarks’ many back roads and scenic byways. Whether you prefer a leisurely stroll, an adrenaline-packed adventure, or something in between, the Ozarks has something for everyone.

Water Sports

The Ozarks is home to several beautiful lakes and rivers, making it an excellent destination for water sports enthusiasts. Visitors can enjoy activities such as boating, fishing, swimming, kayaking, and water skiing. The Lake of the Ozarks is a popular destination for boating enthusiasts, offering over 1,100 miles of shoreline, and the Ozark National Scenic Riverways is a favorite spot for kayakers and canoeists.

Fishing is also a popular activity in the Ozarks, with several species of fish available, including bass, catfish, and trout. The region is home to several professional fishing guides, who can take visitors to the best spots and provide expert advice on techniques and equipment.

Branson Entertainment

Branson, Missouri, is a popular tourist destination known for its family-friendly entertainment. The city offers a wide range of shows, including music, comedy, and magic shows, as well as theme parks and water parks. The most popular show in Branson is the “Presleys’ Country Jubilee,” a musical show that features a variety of country, gospel, and patriotic songs.

Branson also has several theme parks, including Silver Dollar City, which features roller coasters, water rides, and live entertainment. White Water is another popular attraction, offering a variety of water slides, a wave pool, and a lazy river.

Ozark Cuisine

The Ozarks has a unique culinary scene, with dishes that reflect the region’s cultural heritage. Visitors can enjoy a variety of local dishes, including fried chicken, barbecue, and catfish. The region is also famous for its homemade pies, which are a must-try for any visitor.

One of the most famous dishes in the Ozarks is the fried chicken, which is often served with mashed potatoes, gravy, and coleslaw. Barbecue is another popular dish, with several restaurants specializing in smoked meats, including brisket, ribs, and pulled pork. Catfish is also a local favorite, with many restaurants offering fried catfish, catfish sandwiches, and catfish nuggets.

Historical Sites

The Ozarks has a rich history, with several historical sites that offer a glimpse into the region’s past. One of the most popular historical sites is Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield, which is located in Missouri and was the site of a Civil War battle. The battlefield features a visitor center, museum, and several hiking trails.

Another popular historical site is the Pea Ridge National Military Park, located in Arkansas, which was also the site of a Civil War battle. I stopped by and was blown away by an area of the nation that I don’t really associate with the civil war. Still, it was beautiful and worthy of your time if you want to stop.
