The X-Men trailer for Avengers: Doomsday was officially released Tuesday morning. Like the other teases we’ve seen for the upcoming epic, it leans heavily into the one thing the original Avengers films could not — nostalgia.

While fans haven’t had too long to miss Steve Rogers and Thor, the X-Men from the Fox era are characters that have existed on screen and exited it before many current fans were born.

This will clearly mark their final performances in these roles, as Sir Patrick Stewart and Sir Ian McKellen are reaching an age where continued acting is unlikely. Much of the one-minute trailer feels appropriately bittersweet, with just enough X-Men action to get fans excited.

Watch the trailer here:

Trailer Breakdown

Opening with the camera moving around Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters, Stewart, as Professor X, intones, “Death comes for us all.” It’s a heavy opening statement, which enhances the melancholy mood of the trailer. The mansion appears empty, suggesting the X-Men are fading away under the weight of time.

“The question isn’t, ‘Are you prepared to die?'” Professor X continues. “The question is: ‘Who would you be when you close your eyes?'” Stewart fills the lines with authority as the music swells. The camera continues to pan around, and we see that Professor X and Magneto are sitting in the mansion playing chess as old friends.

Before closing the trailer with “The X-Men Will Return in Avengers: Doomsday” title card, audiences are treated to the climactic reveal. The trailer quickly cuts to James Marsden as Cyclops in the character’s comic-accurate blue and yellow X-Men uniform. He rips off his visor to unleash his powerful optic blasts, in what looks like a moment of anguish. It’s a moment that many fans have long waited to see realized on screen.

Promising longtime viewers what they want seems to be the primary concern of the Doomsday marketing campaign.

Setting the Tone

With the Steve Rogers Doomsday trailer, fans were shown that the popular Captain America would be in the movie. Thor’s trailer, promised a return to the more somber portrayal of the character, moving away from the goofy tone of the last few films.

Long-time fans of comic book movies, who have followed the genre’s development since 2000’s X-Men, are now being promised the opportunity to say goodbye to a franchise that many felt never received the proper send-off.

Also worth noting is what’s missing from these trailers. So far, the trailers have focused entirely on male characters — and shown them with a dignity largely absent from recent Marvel projects. Rogers and Thor are portrayed as good fathers. Professor X and Magneto are shown preparing to exit the stage with grace.

Fans have yet to get their first good look at Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom (though that’s likely coming in the final trailer). Bringing back Downey Jr., long considered the face of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is another way of stirring the memories of the fans who used to make Marvel movies events.

Of all the Doomsday trailers, the X-Men one seems to be leaning into the sensations of homecoming and pain the hardest. Doomsday may ultimately serve as Marvel’s most deliberate — and emotional — journey back home.

I have desire to see frail actors flail away at past glory. Let alone, pay for it.

CleatusDefeatus

ZERO desire, to correct.

Rebel Wood

I haven’t seen the Trailer, and I already know it’s Shït.
It doesn’t matter what it is, it WILL be trash, and there is no point in wasting money on it.

I’d rather wipe my ass with razor blades then watch any Hollywood Woke Făggot Films…….

Mark Emark

I have less than zero interest in Doomsday.

The problem with “nostalgia” is that, the “Avengers” actors and actresses made a Kamala ad. Creepy gay morons, that they are, trying to manipulate us.
They are toxic to half the audience, at least.
Another issue is, the actors are now old men / middle aged men. This is just not sexy compared to the original movies they are exploiting. That’s especially true of Scarlett, who looks absolutely hideous, right now.

Vallor

I want to say I won’t be caught up in the hype, and there are some big red flags these trailers are introducing, but if this is like the marvel movies of old, I may be unable to stop myself from shelling out for a theater visit.

I’m not there yet, and these teasers aren’t likely to push me over, so I’m still maintaining my stance against rewarding marvel with any more of my money.

James Eadon

NEVER pay Disney. They hate you. The “Avengers” made an obnoxious ad, for Kamala. Trying to affect a political election what would have destroyed American, had the communists won.

James Eadon

Not to mention they are our enemy, campaigning endlessly to destroy White people, Straight people and belittle men and heroes.
