Once—maybe twice—in a generation, Hollywood discovers an actress who seems to have it all: beauty, grace, and the versatility to excel in action movies, comedies, and Oscar-winning dramas. Traditionally, “producing” a star means finding and amplifying a natural talent. But Tilly Norwood, an AI “actress,” may redefine both the word and the industry

If the rumors are true, Hollywood is seriously considering giving it a chance.

Who – Or What – Is an AI Actress?

Tilly Norwood is an AI actress. She’s a product of Particle6, a London-based production studio that was started in 2015 by Eline van der Velden. According to Particle6’s official website, the company is “seamlessly blending AI innovation with traditional filmmaking to push the boundaries of what’s possible.”

At the Zurich Film Festival last month, van der Velden launched Xicoia, an AI talent studio. In addition to creating Tilly Norwood, Xicoia is also working with current Hollywood stars and the estates of late performers to de-age them or bring “legendary performers back to the big screen, offering studios new ways to reimagine and exploit existing IP,” according to Deadline.

If AI talent is inevitable, audiences may be forced to decide which is more ethical: AI stars who were, and are no longer, or AI creations like Tilly Norwood who never existed outside of a server. In either case, the talent agencies are ready to get involved. For now.

A Star is Generated

Since an Instagram account was created last May, Tilly Norwood has accumulated 46.1K followers. The bio reads, “You’ll either get it or pretend you don’t. I’m a creation,” and describes Tilly as an “Actress (aspiring).” Earlier this year, actress Maya Hawke claimed that movie casts are built around the collective number of followers they have on the social media site. Other stars have echoed the sentiment.

If Tilly Norwood is going to make it into the movies, she’s off to a good start. Between advancements in technology and a strong social media presence, Tilly Norwood could be the first AI actress to open a theatrical film. In fact, according to van der Velden, they’re “going to be announcing which agency is going to be representing her [Tilly] in the next few months.”

As Deadline explains, “If the talent agency signing comes to pass, Norwood will be one of the first AI generated actresses to get representation with a talent agency, traditionally working with real-life stars.” The question becomes, how will stars who built their careers the old fashioned way (i.e.: being born, moving to Hollywood, going to auditions, etc.) feel about sharing a talent agency with an AI actress?

Reactions

A reporter from Variety was present when Emily Blunt first learned about Tilly Norwood. The Oscar-nominated actress was shocked.

“That’s an AI? Good Lord, we’re screwed,” she said. “Come on, agencies, don’t do that. Please stop. Please stop taking away our human connection.”

Other actors quickly chimed in, criticizing the optics of marketing a digital young woman who is entirely under someone else’s control or noting how AI composites might be built from the likenesses of now-out-of-work aspiring actresses.

SAG-AFTRA made an official statement regarding Tilly Norwood and her search for representation, opening with, “SAG-AFTRA believes creativity is, and should remain, human-centered. The union is opposed to the replacement of human performers by synthetics.”

It sounds like something out of Blade Runner—yet it’s happening in present-day Hollywood.

The Reality

In response to the blowback, van der Velden took to Instagram with a statement.

“To those who have expressed anger over the creation of my AI character, Tilly Norwood, she is not a replacement for a human being, but a creative work—a piece of art,” she wrote. Van der Velden compared AI to tools like puppetry, animation, and CGI— “another way to imagine and build stories.” Comments for the post were turned off.

Had Tilly Norwood been introduced simply as the latest advance in puppetry, animation, or CGI—not as a potential replacement for human actresses—the reception might have been far less severe. Now, with actors publicly speaking out, talent agencies must decide whether to embrace digital stars or leave AI “talent” to programmers and digital puppeteers.

This AI must have been trained on Hollywood’s “modern” woke actresses, who are equally ugly.

TTTRRRUUUTTTHHH

The (((liberal elites))) that run Hollywood won’t allow AI to cut into their monopolization of pop culture and the influence they wield with it. If AI replaces all the adult pretenders that are already trained to say the right thing, it becomes obvious to everyone what the scheme always was when AI actors regurgitate the exact same liberal talking points that the trained pretenders already say. It’s giving the whole game away, and (((they))) aren’t stupid enough to do that just to save money by not paying some talentless hack actors.

Mr0303

She is no worse than the fake Hollywood starlets. That being said she’s also not much better.

I’d hit it.
