Tim Burton is officially returning to his roots with a new animated project, but fans may have to wait a while before they see anything concrete. In a recent interview with Mexican outlet Milenio, the visionary director revealed that he’s working on a brand-new animated film.
There’s just one problem. The script doesn’t exist yet.
An Idea Already Brewing
“I am working on something as an animated project,” Tim Burton said in the interview. “So hopefully I’ll have the script soon and take it from there… I’m very excited about it.”

The news was quickly picked up by multiple entertainment sites, including Nerdist, Far Out Magazine, and World of Reel, all of which confirmed that Burton is in early development on the mysterious project. No plot details, casting news, studio involvement, or release plans have been revealed. All that’s available so far is Burton’s casual confirmation that something is brewing behind the scenes.
And that alone is enough to get people talking.
A Legacy Built in Stop-Motion
Burton’s name has become nearly synonymous with stylized animation. Though he didn’t direct The Nightmare Before Christmas (a common misconception) his creative fingerprints are all over it.
He conceived the story, designed the characters, and produced the film, which was ultimately directed by Henry Selick. Burton later took the director’s chair for two more animated features: Corpse Bride (2005) and Frankenweenie (2012), both stop-motion projects that reflected his signature blend of dark whimsy, loneliness, and charm.

Each of these films explored classic Tim Burton themes: death, identity, young love, and the strange beauty of the outsider. For many fans, they remain genre-defining works that continue to influence everything from indie animation to studio projects. That’s why even the suggestion of a new animated film has sparked speculation about what direction he might take this time around.
No Story Details Yet, but Burton’s Excited
As Far Out Magazine pointed out, Burton didn’t offer any specific story clues. However, his enthusiasm suggests he’s ready to dive back into the world of quirky misfits and gothic dreamscapes. Whether he’s planning to return to stop-motion or explore new animation techniques remains unclear.
According to World of Reel, the project appears to be in its earliest conceptual stages, with Tim Burton simply stating he’s waiting on a script before anything else can move forward.

It’s also worth noting that this announcement comes not very long after the release of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the much-anticipated sequel to Burton’s 1988 supernatural comedy. That film reunited original cast members Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder, while introducing a younger generation led by Jenna Ortega. While reception to the sequel was mixed, most agreed it was a return to form for Burton—proof that his offbeat style still has a place in the modern landscape.
Now, with that film behind him, Burton seems to be leaning into passion projects. Whether this new animated feature will be another theatrical release, a streaming exclusive, or something even stranger remains to be seen. No distributor has been named, and Burton didn’t say if the project is under a specific studio banner.
But the excitement is already building.
Speculation Is Already Swirling
While the announcement has yet to set the internet ablaze, it has already raised some interesting questions. Could this be a spiritual successor to Corpse Bride? A new fairy tale? A revival of a shelved idea? Tim Burton has always played things close to the chest, but based on his past work, it’s safe to expect something that’s at once haunting and heartfelt.

For now, the script is the next big step. And until more information is revealed, fans will have to sit tight and hope this animated dream takes shape sooner rather than later.

His greatest Movie is Corpse Bride. As much as people love Beetlejuice and Nightmare Before Christmas, nothing comes close to Corpse Bride.
He has made other Films that are decent like Dark Shadows, but Frankenwiene is proof not everything he does is good.
I’m not expecting this new Film to be good given how bad Hollywood is right now.
