Tom Felton will continue his portrayal of Draco Malfoy in the Broadway production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child through November 1, 2026. The extension was confirmed by the show’s producers in early April 2026.

Felton joined the production in November 2025, marking his Broadway debut. He originally signed on for a limited engagement scheduled to conclude in March 22, 2026. Producers later extended his run to May 2026 before confirming the latest extension to November 1, 2026.

His casting remains notable because he portrayed Draco Malfoy in all eight “Harry Potter” films released between 2001 and 2011. This production marks the first time an actor from the original film series has joined the stage adaptation of the story.

Production Background and Story

The Broadway production is staged at the Lyric Theatre in New York City. The play opened on Broadway in 2018 after premiering in London’s West End in 2016.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child ranks among the most financially successful plays in Broadway history. It is widely recognized as the highest-grossing non-musical play (“straight play”) on Broadway. According to Guinness World Records, the production grossed more than $174 million at the Lyric Theatre by March 2020.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child takes place 19 years after the events of the original book series. The story follows adult versions of Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger, and Draco Malfoy as they navigate life beyond their years at Hogwarts. Each character is now raising children while managing the pressures of adulthood and family responsibilities. Their children attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, forming the central narrative.

Felton’s Role and Schedule

Felton’s return to Draco Malfoy presents a different stage of the character’s life. In the play, Draco is depicted as a father, which contrasts with his earlier portrayal as a student in the films.

Producers have indicated that Felton will perform in most scheduled shows during his extended run. However, he is expected to be absent on select dates throughout 2026. These include May 11-31, August 17-23, September 14-20, and October 12-18.

Industry Context

Casting a well-known film actor in a stage production reflects a broader trend in commercial theater. Producers often bring in established performers to attract wider audiences and sustain ticket sales.

In this case, Felton’s involvement creates a direct link between the original films and the stage production. It also introduces continuity for audiences familiar with the earlier portrayal of Draco Malfoy.

Creative Team and Development

The play was written by Jack Thorne and directed by John Tiffany.

The story was developed in collaboration. However, some fans have pointed out differences between Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and the original book series, mainly in characterization and story logic.

Some viewers feel Harry’s strained relationship with his son Albus is more intense than expected based on his development in the novels. Others note that Ron is portrayed in a more comedic way than in the later books. Draco Malfoy’s adult portrayal has also prompted discussion, with some seeing his more reflective tone as a natural progression, while others view it as a rapid shift. The use of time travel has drawn additional attention, especially because some changes appear to conflict with established rules around time-turning in the original series. Some fans also feel the condensed stage format leads to faster emotional and plot developments than the books. Others, however, view the play as a separate continuation that is not required to align strictly with the original canon.

Since its debut, the production has remained a long-running part of the Broadway theater landscape. Its continued run reflects sustained audience interest and consistent scheduling.

Outlook

Felton’s extended engagement is expected to continue through the fall of 2026. No additional casting changes tied to this extension have been announced.

His continued presence ensures a direct connection between the film series and its stage continuation, while supporting the production’s ongoing run in New York.
