Top Gun Could Knock “The Last Jedi” Out of Tenth Place with Big July 4th

Is it really the case that Maverick may knock Rian Johnson’s deconstruction of Star Wars out of the top ten for all-time domestic box office results? Can this movie seriously get any better?

In modern history there has never been a film do what Top Gun: Maverick is about to achieve. Namely, the Tom Cruise billion-dollar winner is about to become the first film, since modern blockbusters came into being, that will be in the running for first place in the domestic box office, both on Memorial Day Weekend and Independence Day (Fourth of July). Although it’s almost certain that Minions: The Rise of Gru will take the number one spot, there is an outside shot that patriotic moviegoers could push Top Gun into another top place based off of increased IMAX showings.

Even if Top Gun: Maverick doesn’t get the top spot domestically, it still stands alone as the only movie we can think of that will have been a major box office draw on both Memorial Day Weekend and Independence Day Weekend. It doesn’t hurt that the Fourth of July lands on a Monday, equaling a four-day opportunity for Top Gun to go bananas. There’s even a chance here (a good one) that Tom Cruise’s sequel will go up in revenue for the holiday weekend versus the weekend prior.

So lookout, Avatar, and watch your back, Titanic. When it comes to movies that stuck around forever in theatres, it’s looking like Maverick wants a chance to reign supreme. It’ll take one heck of a cinematic jubilee this weekend to do it, but we’re already chatting about just how far Top Gun might still leg it out before all is said and done. There’s really only Thor: Love and Thunder to compete with after the minions get their time in the sun.

Who would have ever thought this movie could do what it’s doing? Here’s to a couple more hundred million, Tom. And the very best thing about all of this? The very best thing?

Are you ready for it?

If Top Gun: Maverick gets another hundred million, it’ll take its place in the top ten domestic releases of all time.

And do you know which movie would be knocked out?

The Last Jedi

Top Gun: Maverick may just be the gift that keeps on giving. Will it kick TLJ down to eleventh place this weekend? No. But a big July Fourth would make it inevitable. And for me, that just might be worth going again. I wonder if it is for you?
