Tom Cruise is the king of the box office for the Summer of 2022. In fact, he’s just the movie king period when it comes to this year.
Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick has surpassed James Cameron’s Titanic to become the seventh-highest grossing movie of all time. The film is a throwback to a bygone era when heroes were heroes and postmodern flaws were not abundant in narratives. Cruise’s latest movie is the sequel to the original Top Gun from 1986.

It is important to note that the listing does not keep track of inflation. Were we to consider either audience size or adjusted income based on inflation, movies like Snow White, Gone with the Wind, and Star Wars: A New Hope would all be far and away bigger than anything we even contemplate today. Though movies make more in terms of a number in today’s era, in terms of cultural impact and societal participation, movies of yesteryear were often bigger. That’s not to take away from Top Gun Maverick’s accomplishment — the movie has one of the greatest “holds” at the box office of all time. It is the only movie in modern times to ever be a major contender during Memorial Day Weekend, Independence Day Weekend and potentially Labor Day Weekend.
As writers have suggested on this site in the past, it’s very likely that Top Gun: Maverick and Spider-Man No Way Home are having dramatic impacts on the film industry. Are studio heads looking at these types of movies when items like Batgirl are cancelled? It’s a great question worth looking into down the road.
As for Titanic, don’t weep too hard for James Cameron. He still has a health lead in terms of the worldwide box office.
