Do smaller crowd levels on Memorial Day signal domestic travel troubles for Disney?
One of the things that we have been following here at That Park Place, is the likelihood that Walt Disney World theme parks are being carried by International tourism. We have had some indicators showing that, but perhaps nothing has been as clear as the non theme park options at Disney. Whereas the theme parks have been at capacity almost every single day for months, the other options at Walt Disney World are in the complete opposite direction. For example, the Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser has struggled to be at capacity despite being a brand new offering. And also, in spite of there only being one Waterpark available, Typhoon Lagoon has seen minuscule crowd levels.
For Memorial Day Weekend, we have decided to send our journalists and writers into the Walt Disney World Resort on a specific mission. That is to discover what is going on with the demographic group distribution inside the parts. As part of that assignment for the weekend, we specifically sent our journalists into Typhoon Lagoon water park. We wanted to see how a single waterpark would handle a typical two waterpark crowd level on one of the most busy days of the year.
What we have discovered is that Typhoon Lagoon for Memorial Day is relatively uncrowded. That is shocking given that it is Memorial Day and that there is only one water park available at Walt Disney World Resort. And yet there are few lines, the parking lot is nowhere close to full, seats are readily available without paying extra, and the lazy river still looks lazy rather than stacked with lemmings.

Another anecdote worth noticing, there are very few International accents at the waterpark today. It continues to make us Wonder, does Disney have a serious domestic problem that will be exacerbated once International crowd levels diminish?
