Christopher Merritt, a veteran designer and former Walt Disney Imagineer, has been appointed Creative Director at Universal Creative.

This move, announced via social media, marks a notable transition from Disney’s storied Imagineering team to its chief competitor, Universal, which is responsible for groundbreaking attractions at destinations like Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Orlando Resort with its all-new Epic Universe theme park.

Who Is Christopher Merritt?

Christopher Merritt boasts over 30 years of experience in the entertainment and theme park sectors, specializing as an art director, creative director, and attraction designer.

His career has been deeply intertwined with Disney’s legacy, where he served as a former Imagineer, contributing to iconic projects long before catching the eye of Universal.

Among his notable achievements, Merritt acted as art director for the Sleeping Beauty Castle walkthrough at Disneyland, a beloved feature that immerses guests in the classic fairy tale. His work extends beyond design into authorship, where he has co-authored several acclaimed books chronicling Disney’s history and creative processes.

Merritt’s literary contributions include Marc Davis In His Own Words: Designing the Disney Theme Parks, co-written with Pixar director Pete Docter, which delves into the artistry of legendary Disney animator Marc Davis.

More recently, in celebration of Disneyland’s 70th anniversary, he collaborated with Disney Legend Don Hahn on The Happiest Place on Earth: The Incredible Story of Walt Disney’s Disneyland, a comprehensive exploration of the park’s development from the early 1950s, featuring rare media and stories from its formative years.

This book, foreworded by Disney CEO Bob Iger, highlights Merritt’s deep expertise in Disney’s theme park evolution.

His bibliography also encompasses works outside Disney, such as Knott’s Preserved, co-authored with J. Eric Lynxwiler, which preserves the history of Knott’s Berry Farm, and Knott’s Bear-y Tales: The Complete History of the Whimsical Attraction, celebrating the 50th anniversary of a classic ride.

Merritt’s involvement in Knott’s projects demonstrates his passion and versatility. Having worked on attractions and environments at the park, he further solidified his reputation as a multifaceted creative in the industry.

Beyond his professional roles, Merritt is an active figure in the theme park community. He has participated in podcasts, roundtables, and events, such as a 2021 discussion on theme park design with fellow former Imagineer Don Carson, and presentations at venues like the Walt Disney Family Museum.

In 2025, he featured in events tied to Disneyland’s milestone, including talks on Marc Davis’s design process with rare concept art and footage.

The Move to Universal Creative

Universal Creative, the innovative arm behind experiences like The Wizarding World of Harry Potter and Jurassic World – The Ride, has long been a rival to Walt Disney Imagineering.

The addition of a former imagineer to the Universal team in such a prestigious role represents a huge acquisition. While details on his specific responsibilities remain sparse, his background in attraction design and storytelling suggests he could influence upcoming projects, potentially elevating Universal’s narrative-driven experiences.

This transition isn’t Merritt’s first venture beyond Disney. His Instagram bio notes a role as Senior Art Director at THG (likely The Hettema Group, a prominent theme park design firm), indicating a career that spans multiple creative entities.

Interviews from late 2024 reveal Merritt’s insights into the industry, where he discussed starting in theme parks and the importance of creative executives.

Implications for the Theme Park Landscape

Merritt’s defection to Universal could signal shifting dynamics in the competitive world of themed entertainment. Disney has faced recent challenges, including criticisms of its park innovations, while Universal continues to expand aggressively with ventures like Epic Universe in Orlando.

Bringing in a talent like Merritt, who literally “wrote the book” on Disneyland’s history, could provide Universal with fresh perspectives on immersive design and historical storytelling at the level of Disney from back when that was something to brag about.

With Merritt’s proven track record, Universal may aim to blend Disney-esque magic with its own high-thrill ethos, possibly influencing future attractions.

As of now, neither Universal nor Merritt has released an official statement beyond the social media reveal, but his LinkedIn profile already reflects the new role. Theme park enthusiasts will undoubtedly keep a close eye on how this former imagineer shapes the next chapter of Universal.
