Surely there has never been a worse year than 2022 when it comes to the deaths of beloved comedians. We’ve said goodbye to Bob Saget, Betty White, Gilbert Godfried, Louie Anderson and… Norm McDonald. Okay, McDonald passed away in 2021, but you know what? 2021 was already bad enough without adding to it, so let’s just lump in the loss of McDonald with 2022 if you don’t mind. There, done.

The good news, if you can imagine there is any after that opening, is that Norm McDonald has given us something unprecedented in the history of comedy. About a year ago, when the comedian was worried he might not have much time left, he decided to record an hour of stand up comedy material in his living room. That hour is now coming to Netflix this month on May 30th. Titled by Norm himself, it’s going to be called Norm McDonald: Nothing Special. In reality, there’s nothing farther from the truth for Norm. Many consider him to be one of the greatest comedians of all time. Everyone else knows he was at least one person willing to go after the sacred cows that nobody else would touch.

We will have the review for the comedy special on the day that it releases. We have already assigned one of our writers, Gregg Thomas, with the task. He’s agreed although he says this one is going to be done through teary eyes. We feel the same.

In honor of Norm McDonald, here’s one of our favorite bits from an appearance on Conan:
