Director and Gollum actor Andy Serkis still has plans to take audiences back to Middle-earth. His upcoming film, Lord of the Rings: Hunt for Gollum will bring back some of the original cast from Peter Jackson’s iconic trilogy. Viggo Mortensen will not be going on this journey, however, as the role of Aragorn has officially been recast.
The film will be something a prequel/parallel story to the events of The Fellowship of the Ring. Notably, Mortensen was around 40 years old when the first film in the trilogy was shot. Now, 67, even Hollywood’s impressive de-aging technology may not have been able to facilitate a satisfying performance.

Instead, Aragorn—called by his Dúnedain moniker Strider in new promotional materials—will by played be Jamie Dornan.
Serkis Confirms Some Returning Cast
As part of Warner Bros. presentation at CinemaCon, Serkis released a statement about Hunt for Gollum.
“Across two trilogies, a mark of a Middle-earth film, has always been the formidable array of talent brought to bear in every role. The Hunt for Gollum continues in that tradition, and I am delighted to announce the return of two of Middle-earth’s most beloved performers, alongside some exceptionally talented new additions to Tolkien’s world,” Serkis wrote.
The two returning actors he refers to are Ian McKellen as Gandalf and Elijah Wood as Frodo. Alongside his directing duties, Serkis will also reprise his dual role as Gollum and Sméagol. It remains unclear whether the film will show him before the Ring fully corrupts his appearance.

Mortensen has not publicly addressed whether he was invited to reprise the role. In 2024, he told GQ that he enjoyed playing Aragorn. However, when asked if he hoped to return for Hunt for Gollum, he said, “I would only do it if I was right for it in terms of, you know, the age I am now and so forth. I would only do it if I was right for the character. It would be silly to do it otherwise.”
With that in mind, fans speculated that Viggo Mortensen would not return and that Aragorn would be recast.
The Search for Aragorn
A week before CinemaCon, Serkis confirmed that the role of Aragorn would be recast. However, he declined to offer any hints about who he had in mind. “I don’t know what’s out there at the moment, but I know there’s a lot of speculation,” he told Screen Rant. “But let’s just say we are recasting the role and we are on the way to finding someone.”

The casting process may have been further along than he implied. Jamie Dornan, best known for his leading role in the Fifty Shades of Grey films, is only a year or two older than Mortensen was when he first played Aragorn. Other new additions to The Hunt for Gollum cast include Leo Woodall as Halvard, another member of the Dúnedain, and Kate Winslet as Marigol, a new character. Lee Pace will reprise his role from The Hobbit films as the elf Thranduil.
Release Date and Franchise Expectations
Lord of the Rings: Hunt for Gollum is scheduled to hit theaters December 17, 2027.

Viggo Mortensen’s performance as Aragorn remains widely regarded as definitive. Because of that legacy, any recasting will inevitably invite close scrutiny from longtime fans. Jamie Dornan now steps into the role of Strider, carrying both the expectations of the franchise and the weight of its history.
As production moves forward, audiences will be watching closely to see how this new chapter balances nostalgia with reinvention, and whether Dornan can truly fill Strider’s boots.

“Jamie Dornan now steps into the role of Strider, carrying both the expectations of the franchise and the weight of its history.”
With respect to Trevor, but I wholeheartedly disagree. No one has any real expectations for this film. Not positive ones anyway. Most of this think it’s an ill-conceived project from the start. If it manages to be competent in the least, and Dornan isn’t a disaster as Aragorn, then they will have exceeded my expectations.
Expectations are that HUNT FOR GOLLUM is a nostalgia-driven cash grab; much like Stephen Colbert’s work in progress and HBO’S Temu Harry Potter…
We never needed a trilogy of Hobbit films when that singular book is the shortest of the series, but here we are again with another film that was never expected nor asked for. (Not to mention Amazon’s not half bad but pointless series.) And yes, Viggo will alway be the definitive Aragorn.
If Amazon can milk 5 seasons of TV out of what amounts to 100 pages of an appendix, they can get 1000 movies with Gollum.
And calling Rings of Power “not half bad but pointless” shows a dramatic lack of sense or taste. You may have been infected with Modern Audien-ceitus. Some people who have contracted this disease were lucky enough to live in Canada where they can get treatment from their local MAID provider. MAID is the only known cure but it is survivable with regular doses of non-woke stories and media that don’t pander or rely on DEI for their audience or funding.
(I KEED! I would never suggest someone should die for realz just because they like Rings of Power… after all, it won’t help since that is proof they are already dead inside. DAMN IT! I typed that out loud, didn’t I?)
If they make a movie of the quality of Lord Of The Rings, i.e. as true to the lore as possible for movies to reasonably get, and keep to the philosophy of our noble forefathers, i.e. the opposite of woke, then it does not matter much who you cast, the film will be loved.
BUT, Hollywood lacks the will to do that. There will be DEI, girl bosses, gayness, and finger-wagging at the no-nonsense values of our forefathers.
Because Hollywood is Sauron, and its workers and woke actors are his orcs. The scourge of the Shire is what Hollywood does to White people.
— Fade in to a wide shot. Image begins blotchy but slowly gains clarity and resolves to a scene with a dozen people sitting around a table doom scrolling The Mary Sue on their cell phones —
One of them suddenly looks up and jumps, as if struck by lightening, and begins babbling.
“Folx, I think I have a great idea. Hear me out! You know how fantasy porn… romantasy is all the rage right now? What if we tapped (hehe) into that for our new… what franchise is this? Oh yeah, new Lawd of the Rangs… what? Oh fine, ‘Lord of the Rings’ movie?
Maybe we can try to set it up as a thirst trap by bringing in that guy – I’m sorry, I assumed he was a cis male, which I realize is wrong with a first name of Jenny. err Jamie – who played the Dom in that S&M 50 shades porn trilogy to play Strident. Strider? Ok, whatever the name is.
He’s supposed to be one of the most virtuous characters in western literature and bringing in a person we hope will be a thirst trap is totally against character? Naw, it’ll be fine.
Now the best part is… wait for it… we’re also going “make it our own!” By inventing a bunch of crap we can avoid sticking to any semblance of lore because, as we all know, accuracy and respect is an anathemata and stifles our… um… creativity, yeah, that’s the ticket! It isn’t that we want to butcher all that is good and true. Nope, not that at all.
And let’s get that chick with the boobs from Titanic – drat, I assumed gender again, I will make a donation to the 2SLGBTQIA++ brainwashing fund for absolution – anyway, get boobs PERSON to play someone who might end up being Tiger’s… err, Strider’s love interest!
Huh? What is an Airowin? Fine, WHO is Arwind? Arwen, whatever. Hmm, just the love of Strider’s life; a tale of such deep tragedy and unfathomable love not even the greatest elven bard or poet could capture the essence? Naw, it’ll be fine.
— Fade to black —
This movie deserves to fail harder than Madam Web. If that can happen to a “Spiderverse” movie, we can hope this, combined with the Rings of Power flop finally kills off adaptions of Tolkien.
I wonder if they originally intended to cast Aragon with an Afro-Australopithecine, but then the black-Snape Harry Potter backlash gave them pause for thought.
Of course, Cynthia whatshername will be playing herself, I mean, Gollum, clutching “My precious” Adrenochrome.
