Walmart Says Zelda Switch 2 Preorder Cancellations Were an Error, Offers 48-Hour Rebuy

Walmart is walking back a wave of Legend of Zelda Switch 2 console preorder cancellations that hit customers right as shipping was supposed to start. The retailer is telling affected buyers the cancellations were “in error,” parking an “Exclusive Reservation” in their carts, and giving them 48 hours to check out again. In some cases, Walmart is also sending a $519 e-gift card, the console’s original price, which effectively makes the replacement unit free.

Kotaku reported the make-good on Oct. 30 after the cancellations landed about a day before consoles were due. The Zelda-branded Switch 2 bundle is tied to the Nov. 5 launch of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake on Switch 2, so the timing turned a retail glitch into a holiday-week mess for anyone who had planned to play the remake on the matching hardware.

How the Fix Works

Customers who got the cancellation mail are being told to check the email address on the original preorder. Inside the Walmart account, an Exclusive Reservation line item should appear in the cart. Checking out on that item rebooks the console. The 48-hour clock is the hard edge. Miss it, and the reservation path is gone.

The $519 gift card is not landing for every canceled order based on the early reports. Where it does appear, it’s a blunt apology: Walmart is handing buyers the sticker price of the console as store credit while also letting them repurchase the hardware.

Why the Cancellations Stung

Limited console editions already run on thin inventory. A cancellation email the day before delivery is about the worst retail message you can send to that audience, especially when the software hook is a major Zelda remake five days later. Buyers who cleared their calendars for a Nov. 5 unboxing suddenly had neither the special hardware nor a clear restock date.

Walmart’s error language frames the cancellations as a mistake rather than an inventory pull. That’s better optics for the retailer, and it gives customer service a script. It doesn’t automatically put a console on a truck overnight. Anyone who reclaims a reservation should still watch shipment estimates if the remake-night plan depends on the Zelda Switch 2 arriving before Nov. 5.

What Buyers Should Do Today

Check email and the Walmart cart first. If the Exclusive Reservation is there, check out before the 48-hour window closes. If the gift card mail arrives, save the claim info and decide whether to put it toward the console, a Pro Controller, games, or something else entirely. If neither message has shown up but you received a cancellation, contact Walmart support with the original order number rather than assuming you’re outside the make-good period.

Nintendo hasn’t made a first-party statement on this, and it doesn’t need to. The hardware is still a retail allocation story, meaning its Walmart’s issue to deal with. For players, the only clock that matters is the one on the reservation. Forty-eight hours is short on purpose. Use it.
