Warner Bros. Pictures has officially announced that new sequels are in development for two of its most beloved 1980s franchises: Gremlins and The Goonies. The studio confirmed the news in a new interview with Deadline, offering a glimpse into its upcoming lineup of legacy projects.

The announcement came from Warner Bros. Pictures Chair and CEO Pam Abdy, who said, “We’re super excited about Amblin developing with Chris Columbus, new entries in the Gremlins and Goonies franchises.” The wording and recent reporting confirm that these are not reboots, but continuations of the original stories.

Gremlins, released in 1984, was written by Chris Columbus and directed by Joe Dante. The horror-comedy became a cult hit and spawned a 1990 sequel, Gremlins 2: The New Batch. While a third installment was reportedly in development as far back as 2010, it never made it into production. The franchise was revived in animated form in 2023 with Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai on Max. A second season, retitled Gremlins: The Wild Batch, premiered in April 2025.

Though Warner Bros. has not confirmed specific plot details or casting for the new live-action Gremlins film, the term “new entries” and the franchise’s prior development history suggest that the project will continue the existing story rather than reboot the timeline.

In the case of The Goonies, Warner Bros. has more explicitly confirmed a sequel. The 1985 adventure film was written by Chris Columbus from a story by Steven Spielberg and directed by Richard Donner. The original cast included Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Corey Feldman, Ke Huy Quan, Jeff Cohen, Martha Plimpton, and Kerri Green.

Earlier this year, Deadline reported that Warner Bros. had hired Potsy Ponciroli (Old Henry) to write a sequel to the original film. Spielberg, Kristie Macosko Krieger, and Holly Bario are producing through Amblin Entertainment, with Chris Columbus also returning as a producer. Lauren Shuler Donner has signed on as executive producer. No director has been announced yet, and story details remain under wraps.

The Goonies cast reunited in March for a ceremony honoring Ke Huy Quan at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles. He was joined by fellow cast members Jeff Cohen, Corey Feldman, Kerri Green, and Josh Brolin. Quan, who played the fan-favorite character Data, previously stated he would be open to returning if a sequel moved forward.

“It’s one of the greatest adventures of my life,” he said in a past interview with TooFab. “I would be so happy to revisit that character.”

No release dates have been announced for either sequel, and it remains unclear whether the original Gremlins cast will be involved. Both projects are still in early stages of development.
