The HBO Harry Potter reboot series just got a major injection of nostalgia in the form of veteran actor Warwick Davis.

In a move that has longtime fans buzzing, Warner Bros. and HBO announced that Warwick Davis will reprise his role as Professor Filius Flitwick, the Hogwarts Charms Master, in the sprawling multi-season reboot. Davis’ return marks the first time an original film cast member has been confirmed to cross over into the new production.

The news was unveiled during the annual Back to Hogwarts celebration, a day when Potter fans gather worldwide to mark the start of a new school year at Hogwarts. It was the perfect stage to drop the casting bombshell—and it’s already being hailed as one of the smartest choices HBO has made since announcing the reboot.

A Familiar Face in a New Era

Warwick Davis is no stranger to the Wizarding World. Across the eight-film saga, he portrayed not only Professor Flitwick but also the goblin Griphook. While other roles are being recast for the series—actor Leigh Gill will play Griphook this time—HBO and Warner Bros. decided Davis was irreplaceable as the pint-sized Charms teacher.

For fans worried about the reboot drifting too far from the magic of the original films, Davis’ return offers a symbolic through-line. It sends a message: even as the story is retold with new actors, some pieces of Hogwarts remain timeless.

A Stacked Yet Controversial Cast

Warwick Davis joins an ensemble that mixes rising newcomers with veteran talent for the Harry Potter HBO series:

  • Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter
  • Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger
  • Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley
  • John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore
  • Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape (more on that in a moment)
  • Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid
  • Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall

Hogwarts’ staff will also include Sirine Saba as Pomona Sprout, Richard Durden as Cuthbert Binns (a ghostly character cut from the original WB movies), and Bríd Brennan as Madam Pomfrey. Younger cast members round out the Gryffindor and Slytherin houses, with Elijah Oshin as Dean Thomas, Gracie Cochrane as Ginny Weasley, and Tristan and Gabriel Harland as Fred and George Weasley.

It’s a cast designed to balance gravitas with youthful energy—veterans to anchor the story, and fresh faces to redefine the next generation of Harry Potter.

But of course it’s not without its controversies…

Casting Controversy: Snape Reimagined

Perhaps the most divisive casting announcement so far is Paapa Essiedu as Professor Severus Snape. While Essiedu is an accomplished actor with credits in I May Destroy You and The Lazarus Project, many fans immediately saw this as yet another example of Hollywood race-swapping a legacy character for the sake of optics.

Alan Rickman’s Snape wasn’t just a strong performance—it was one of the most iconic portrayals in modern cinema. His physicality, voice, and aura defined the character for millions. For HBO to discard that image and replace it with a race-swapped version strikes many as less about honoring the source material and more about virtue signaling to critics and activist circles.

Social media backlash was swift, with Potter fans accusing the studio of ignoring the books in favor of pushing modern identity politics. For a series that claims to be a “faithful” adaptation, the move is already being seen as hypocritical. If HBO cannot convince audiences that these casting choices serve the story rather than the latest Hollywood agenda, the new Harry Potter series could be fighting an uphill battle before the first episode even airs.

Will This Work—or Will Fans Reject It?

Here’s the big question: can lightning strike twice?

Warner Bros. Discovery has a lot riding on this reboot. After years of trying to recapture the Harry Potter magic with spin-offs like Fantastic Beasts (which sputtered to the finish line), this series is their attempt to return to the foundation that built the brand.

But fan skepticism remains high. Many lifelong Potter readers feel the original films still hold up, flaws and all. Others worry that recasting iconic roleswill alienate an audience that grew up with Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint.

Bringing back Warwick Davis for the Harry Potter HBO series may be a calculated way to soften the blow. It reminds fans that the reboot isn’t trying to erase what came before but to build upon it. Whether that reassurance will be enough remains to be seen.

Conclusion

The HBO Harry Potter series is already one of the most talked-about television projects in years. With filming underway, a massive budget, and Warwick Davis’ surprise return as Professor Flitwick, Warner Bros. Discovery is signaling that it’s serious about this being a cornerstone of its streaming strategy.

Now, all eyes turn to 2027, when the series will debut. Will fans embrace the reboot as the definitive adaptation of Rowling’s books—or will the shadow of the original films loom too large?

For now, Hogwarts has called back one of its most beloved professors, and that’s enough to make Potterheads lean forward with curiosity.

That’s like trying to get the band back together and all you can muster is the chick on the tambourine.

I mean they destroyed and humiliated Willow, why not try the same with Flitwick as well. It’s even better if they can have the same actor do it.

I hope he asked the lord of dwarfs, Dinklage, if he is allowed to “humiliate” himself playing a little person.

They are so desperate for this Trash to work.
It’s DOA in every way, and when people watch it and are spending the entire time guessing if Harry is a Girl or Boy, the Show will bomb.

It has some of the worst Casting since Shaq in Kazaam………..
