Everyone is abuzz about “Wish” from The Walt Disney Company. Some think the art style and jokes are adorable. Others find the trailer to be a little cheap and Disney Junior-esque. Whatever the case may be, Disney is hoping for a major win and very soon. It seems the company has already written off Elemental to some degree — there’s almost no marketing whatsoever. I don’t think I’m digging this latest lyrical trend of jamming up every bar of music with so many syllables. It’s a very Lin-Manuel Miranda thing that fails more than it succeeds. “You’re welcome” is about as far as you can take this style and still end up with an iconic song, and it only worked in that case because it had a rappy/hip-hoppy quality that lent itself well to Dwayne Johnson’s very limited voice. But I’m not sure you can produce an ultra viral ballad a la “Let it Go” with this new hyper wordy style. I know they want to subvert everyone’s expectations when it comes to social themes and what not, but don’t subvert my damn ears. If the bar calls for a 10 syllable lyric, give me 10 syllables, not 17.
From most of the character/ place names you’d think they were going to try to appeal to the Hispanic audience and yet the girl is clearly rendered to be of Black African descent. Hollywood white liberals seem to think that everyone they term ‘people of color’ are interchangeable. Maybe they should have a look at any Hispanic Soap Opera that isn’t produced by Netflix or any weather forecaster girl on Spanish language television. Hint: they don’t look like ‘Asha’.
You should’ve been nice to Elemental and give it a chance to try to be successful, but I appreciate that you are very positive and being hopeful that Wish will be successful. Thanks. I think it’s going to do better than Strange World.
