At least for now, Pro is one-for-one. The first big leak of 2023 has been corroborated by another source out on the web. And it’s a big one. Link is poised for a Hyrule arrival on the big screen.
He’s done it yet again. Last Sunday evening on the Renegade Online show, writer for That Park Place, WDW Pro, released a major leak from inside Hollywood. According to Pro, if the new Super Mario Bros movie passed a certain success threshold, the next film coming out of a developing Nintendo World cinematic universe would not be Super Mario Bros 2. Instead, it would be a Zelda movie. And according to Pro now (which he could not say at the time of filming), the number needed to trigger the greenlight for a Zelda film would be between $600 – $700 million in box office gross.
Now it appears that first leak from WDW Pro for the 2023 year was absolutely true.
According to Giant Freaking Robot’s oft-right source, author Michileen Martin says that Illumination Studios is indeed in development of a Zelda movie for the big screen. No mention of a Mario Bros 2 is made, confirming another of Pro’s statements:
The greatest hero of Hyrule is finally on his way to the big screen. Our trusted and proven sources tell us Illumination — the same studio behind projects like the Despicable Me franchise and the upcoming The Super Mario Bros. Movie — is developing an animated The Legend of Zelda movie. Assuming it eventually makes it to the big screen, it will be the very first film adaptation of the franchise.
All of this makes it ever more likely that Pro’s thesis that a Nintendo Cinematic Universe is in development and underway. There’s no reason more movies, such as Star Fox, Metroid, Kirby, etc, couldn’t be put into production if both Mario Bros and Zelda prove highly successful. And then, of course, there’s the strong possibility of sequels for all of those. Could Nintendo even build everything up for a mashup series featuring the various worlds colliding? We think that could be a smashing good time.
It sounds like from the video above, it wouldn’t even be a shock to see other non-Nintendo characters pop up in such a Nintendo Avengers. According to Pro, the launch of this Nintendo intiative comes on the heels of seeing how successful Sonic was with a CGI-Live Action hybrid that listened to fans. That may mean this new cinematic universe will likewise stay close to the source material.
As for me, I just can’t wait for a Zelda Movie soundtrack. Yes, please.
And if you think Disney is worried about a Nintendo animated universe… just imagine if a Hyrule expansion comes for Epic Universe.
