Why September Is the Very Best Time to Visit a Florida Beach

Different people claim different times are the very best to go to a Floridian beach. In reality, there is actually one correct answer… and it is now!

There seems to be no better time to travel to Florida beaches than literally right now. The kids are back in school, families have gone back to work, the snow birds have not yet fled cold weather down to their wintery sunshine homes. From Vilano Beach down to Key West, from mid-September until late October, you are looking at some of the most tranquil beach-going you’ll ever find. Best of all, this is when those who can travel are most likely to find the very best deals.

“There are three waves of snow birds,” explains Daytona Beach resident, Stan Waldrop. “The first wave is after Halloween, the second is after Thanksgiving. The last holdouts will make their way down here once Christmas is over and the grandkids have all their presents. But between now and then, this is the time to come down if you can.”

Daytona Beach, Florida, is relatively deserted from mid-September until the end of October.

Looking at St. Augustine and its amazing beaches, hotels in the area have dropped all the way down to nearly $100 a night. That’s pretty amazing given all the things to do, see, and place to shop near St. Augustine! It’s also a huge drop-off from where the hotels were just a few weeks ago before school came back in session.

A quick stroll through the Old Town parts of St. Augustine reveals a nearly empty marketplace. Guests interested in those world famous crab cake tapas at the Columbia Restaurant can look forward to nearly zero wait time depending on when the arrive.

This isn’t an aerial photo of the beaches during the height of the pandemic. This is just the height of September.

We’re not the only ones to discover September beaches are the best beaches. Over at Resort Collection, they also document a similar finding:

As locals, we want to let you in on a little secret. Based on average weather, crowds, and rates, the best times to visit Florida are March-April or September-October. We’ll break down the best time to plan your Florida vacation by season, with details on Florida’s eight regions, weather, crowds, activities, and rates.   Florida is a beach vacationer’s dream with 1,350 miles of coastline, a sub-tropical climate, and enough annual sunshine to receive the nickname “Sunshine State,” it’s no surprise that Florida is the second highest most visited state in the US.

All of that might be true, but a word of warning to those planning to travel in the spring:

Beware Spring Break!!!

No, seriously — it may sound like fun to go to Florida in March and April, but you can also run into noisy, often drunken, Spring Break crowds. That’s especially true the longer into spring you wait. Unfortunately, the earlier you go the more chance you have of winding up on a very cold beachfront. Few people dream of walking on the sand in bitterly cold weather when March forgets that spring is supposed to have arrived. That’s why September is the very best for those of you who can make it down.

Now is the time. We’ll see you on the beach!
