Moderators of the largest WNBA community on Reddit have reversed course after reportedly filtering posts and comments containing Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham’s name.

Cunningham has become one of the WNBA’s most recognizable players, both for her performance on the court and her comments about biological men competing in women’s sports. The latest online controversy demonstrates how quickly certain corners of the internet will attempt to cancel someone for expressing a different view, regardless of her accomplishments.

Reddit Moderator Threatens Cunningham Fan With Ban

The controversy began when an r/WNBA user discovered that the subreddit would not allow Cunningham’s name or several related abbreviations to appear in a post. Screenshots shared with Fox News appeared to show a moderator confirming that the restriction was intentional.

“Why do you ban people from posting about Sophie Cunningham, who’s a WNBA player?” the user asked.

“We filter content based on Sophi because it tends to bring out trolls and people who aren’t fans of the W,” the moderator responded.

When the user pointed out that Cunningham is an active WNBA player with legitimate fans, the moderator suggested finding another community.

“We have chosen to filter content,” the moderator wrote. “If you want to post freely about Sophie you can go to a different sub.”

The exchange became more hostile when the user continued questioning the policy.

“You aren’t even a contributor to this sub, so I suggest you go back to the other WNBA subs,” the moderator responded. “This is our decision. If you keep messaging about this you will be banned.”

Why Was Sophie Cunningham’s Name Filtered?

In a July interview with ESPN, Cunningham addressed her public image. She noted that she had faced considerable criticism from people accusing her of hostility toward certain groups. However, she argued that her primary interest was protecting women’s sports.

“I think that I am here to extend love. But I also think with that love is truth, being honest,” she said. “And I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn’t have to go against biological men.”

Although Cunningham has made clear that her position is not motivated by hatred, it has generated protests, criticism, and political arguments throughout the WNBA community. The r/WNBA moderators apparently hoped that filtering her name would prevent trolls and users with little interest in basketball from overwhelming the subreddit. However, given Reddit’s reputation as an echo chamber for progressive politics, banning Cunningham’s name suggested something more than routine moderation.

The restriction also prevented fans from having legitimate conversations about Cunningham’s games, statistics, interviews, and endorsements. Fans reportedly could not even create posts celebrating her 30th birthday on August 16.

Moderators Reverse Course Following Backlash

Following the backlash, r/WNBA moderators issued a clarification declaring that Cunningham-related content was no longer prohibited.

“Posts about Sophie are welcome when they are related to basketball, including games, highlights, interviews, statistics, marketing endorsements, and other WNBA-related news,” the moderators wrote. “Off-court Sophie content can be shared as well.”

Instead of filtering Cunningham’s name, the subreddit raised the minimum community-karma requirement for creating any new post to 50. Moderators said the policy applies to all subjects and is intended to discourage trolling and coordinated brigading.

The clarification directly contradicts the earlier message acknowledging that Cunningham content had been deliberately filtered. While the moderators now insist she was never banned, their reversal came only after the policy attracted national attention.

For now, Sophie Cunningham’s fans are once again allowed to discuss her. However, by treating the name of an active WNBA player as a moderation problem, the subreddit transformed an internal rule into another high-profile fight over censorship, politics, and the boundaries of acceptable debate.
