The World of Disney Opening Ceremony takes place each morning at the World of Disney store in Disney Springs, Florida. The event began in September 2025 and was designed to bring back a tradition once common in Disney Stores located in shopping malls. In those earlier versions, guests—often children—were invited to use a large key to “unlock” the store.

That brief event included interactions with cast members and simple theatrical elements. The current ceremony at Disney Springs adapts that format to a larger and more detailed setting.

Each morning before the store opens, cast members set up a themed podium in front of the entrance. A decorative lock is mounted on the front of the podium and remains covered until the ceremony begins. The design of the lock, podium, and surrounding props changes with the seasons. For instance, during the Halloween season, the podium includes bats, a Mickey Mouse pumpkin, and dark color schemes. Sound effects and a themed announcement match the current decoration. These seasonal designs are expected to change throughout the year to reflect different holidays or events.

One guest is chosen to perform the opening. Cast members usually select a child or a family waiting near the front of the line. The selected guest receives a large ceremonial key. This key features a Disney “D” at the handle and a castle design at the opposite end. Colored lights and stars appear in the center section of the key. Once ready, the guest is guided by cast members to insert and turn the key in the lock. Turning the key signals the store to open, and the entrance doors swing open.

After the key is turned, cast members roll out a red carpet in front of the store. The guest then walks the carpet while cast members applaud and wave. In some cases, bubble wands are used to create a playful atmosphere. The selected guest also receives a commemorative card. The card reads, “I unlocked the magic at World of Disney,” and includes a golden sticker that says “Own The Magic.”

A quote from Walt Disney is printed on the card: “It takes people to make the dream a reality.”

The event happens every day, not just on weekends or holidays. Cast members confirmed that the ceremony is expected to continue into the next year. It adds a small interactive element to the guest experience and offers a unique start to the shopping day. Unlike the previous mall store ceremonies, this version takes advantage of the larger space and changing decor. It maintains the basic idea of the guest “unlocking” the store but adapts it for a more complex setting.

Guests who want to participate are encouraged to arrive early. Only one guest or family is selected per day, and the choice is made before the store opens. While the ceremony is brief, it adds an extra layer to the daily routine and has drawn interest from visitors. As the seasons change, the store is expected to introduce new decorative elements, although the ceremony’s format will likely remain the same. Currently the lock box is Halloween-themed, though that is expected to change around November.

This new implementation revives a tradition familiar to those who visited Disney Store locations in earlier decades. In those stores, a child would often use a large plastic key to symbolically open the location at the start of the day. Although that version was retired when many mall locations closed, the current ceremony retains several of its core elements while adjusting for the scale of Disney Springs.

Guests who wish to participate are encouraged to arrive early, as the selection is made prior to the official opening time. The experience has gained attention from visitors and theme park observers alike. However, participation remains limited to one guest or family per day. The ceremony has so far remained consistent in structure, though the appearance and specific decor will likely vary by season.

Love it. Details like this matter. We had an early ADR at Teppan Edo once and got to see their opening welcome. That made it a special meal.
