The latest Taylor Sheridan debut does quite well with numbers that would make big headlines… if not for other companies posting dubious mega-claims about their others shows.

Let us delve into the ever-evolving narrative of “Yellowstone,” a television series that has traversed many successes on Paramount Network, and now, its series premiere has found its way onto the expansive canvas of broadcast television, specifically CBS. This transition brought forth a major audience, with 6.6 million viewers tuning in on a Sunday night. That’s pretty great for broadcast television — even if companies like Disney have been claiming insane numbers for their streaming shows (and we question those, you bet).

This surge represents a notable ascent from the initial episode’s debut in 2018, which had garnered 2.8 million viewers. However, such an increase was expected, given that CBS, with its vast reach, extends its embrace to a broader viewership, unlike its cable network counterpart. Notably, “Yellowstone” has transformed into a major sensation since its inception.

Yellowstone Ratings Down Season-to-Season But Still Great

For a more recent benchmark, Paramount Network’s airing of the Season 5 premiere in November drew an impressive 8.8 million viewers. When you consider simultaneous broadcasts across Country Music Television, TVLand, and Pop TV, this figure swelled to a staggering 10.5 million.

The “Yellowstone” episode that graced Sunday’s primetime also enjoyed a fortuitous lead-in, courtesy of “60 Minutes,” which commanded the attention of 11.4 million viewers. Moving forward, the series will continue its broadcast trajectory, delivering two episodes per week, with the exception of NFL doubleheader nights, when only one episode shall grace the screens.

The decision by CBS to air “Yellowstone” and other titles nested within the Paramount ecosystem serves as a strategic maneuver to fortify its autumn programming roster amidst the ongoing labor strikes within the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and Screen Actors Guild‐American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA).

“Yellowstone,” born as the maiden creation of Taylor Sheridan for Paramount Global, has blossomed into a sprawling universe. The prequel series “1883” embarked on its journey on Paramount+ in 2022, alongside another prequel series, “1923,” which shall make a triumphant return for its second season. Further enriching this narrative tapestry, “Lawmen: Bass Reeves” will soon grace Paramount+ as a spinoff of “1883,” while “6666” sets its course for Paramount Network. As we look ahead, “1944” is in the crucible of development, poised as a sequel to “1923,” and the annals of an untitled spinoff are also unfolding.

In this evolving landscape, the saga of “Yellowstone” continues to captivate and expand its narrative tendrils across the television landscape. The journey has just begun, and the canvas of possibilities remains boundless.
