The Zootopia 2 box office performance has officially entered historic territory, delivering Walt Disney Animation Studios one of its most decisive theatrical victories in years. Just 17 days after hitting theaters, the animated sequel has crossed the $1 billion global mark, making it the fastest PG-rated film in history to reach that milestone and the quickest animated Hollywood release ever to do so.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Zootopia 2 surged past the billion-dollar benchmark on Friday, propelled by sustained domestic momentum and a massive international turnout. The achievement places the sequel in rare company, especially at a time when the broader industry continues to question the long-term stability of theatrical releases.

As of its third weekend, Zootopia 2 has grossed approximately $259.6 million domestically and $877.8 million overseas, bringing its worldwide total to roughly $1.08 billion. That overseas figure is particularly significant, as it positions the film as the second-highest-grossing Western release internationally of all time, trailing only Avengers: Endgame.

A Record-Smashing Run From Day One

The historic Zootopia 2 box office trajectory began immediately. The film debuted over the five-day Thanksgiving corridor with a staggering $559.5 million global opening, marking the highest global debut for an animated film in Disney’s history and the biggest animated opening worldwide for 2025.

That momentum has not slowed. In its third weekend, Zootopia 2 added $26.3 million domestically, reclaiming the top spot at the U.S. box office after briefly losing ground to Five Nights at Freddy’s 2. The sustained performance demonstrates strong repeat attendance and broad appeal across family audiences.

Notably, the sequel has also avoided what industry observers often call the “China curse.” Instead of underperforming overseas like many of Hollywood’s other major projects, Zootopia 2 has thrived internationally, reinforcing its status as a truly global event rather than a domestically driven hit.

A Major Win for Disney Animation

Beyond the raw numbers, the Zootopia 2 box office success marks a pivotal moment for Walt Disney Animation Studios. This is the first time the studio has delivered back-to-back billion-dollar theatrical releases, following last year’s Moana 2. Since 2013, Disney Animation has now produced five billion-dollar titles across the Frozen, Moana, and Zootopia franchises.

This also comes after a string of historic box ofice bombs like Wish and Strange World, along with Pixar failures like Lightyear and Elio.

Jared Bush, chief creative officer at Walt Disney Animation Studios, emphasized the importance of the milestone in a statement celebrating the film’s achievement.

“Everyone at Disney Animation put their heart, soul and passion into this film to tell a story full of joy, imagination and incredible thoughtfulness,” Bush said. “This milestone means the world to us, because more than anything, it means audiences are coming to theaters for a shared experience of watching this movie on the big screen, everyone together, from all walks of life around the world — and that is a Zootopia dream come true.”

The success also reignited interest in the original 2016 Zootopia, which reportedly saw record-breaking home-entertainment viewership in the wake of the sequel’s release.

Theatrical Resilience in a Shifting Industry

The timing of Zootopia 2’s success is hard to ignore. With ongoing uncertainty surrounding theatrical windows, streaming strategies, and major studio consolidation, the film’s performance offers a clear reminder that audiences will still show up when a movie connects.

While adult-oriented titles continue to struggle at the box office, family-friendly event films like Zootopia 2 are proving that theatrical demand hasn’t disappeared—it has simply become more selective.

With the Christmas holiday corridor still ahead and limited direct competition for family audiences, industry analysts expect Zootopia 2 to continue climbing. While no additional projections were confirmed at the time of reporting, its current pace suggests the sequel’s box office run is far from finished.

For Disney, the message is unmistakable: when the studio delivers a broad-appeal animated feature with strong word of mouth and no divisive politics, the audience response can still be overwhelming.
